my husband is experiencing very acute anxiety and extreme depression. Local Doc w/ great reputation prescribed both Celexa 20 mg for 2 wks then 40 mg thereafter. Two days into it and no significant improvement in depression. Dark room, dark thoughts, etc. How patient should I be. Klonopin 1 mg/day prescribed for anxiety issue. HELP!

Unfortunately it takes 2-4 weeks to get an effect from an anti-depressant. So don't be discouraged that you are seeing no effect. I would think that his therapist would want to wait 6-8 weeks before considering a medication change. But the waiting is hard when someone is in such acute distress.

Celexa has been very effective for me. I got relief from anxiety almost immediately, but it took 2-3 weeks for the depression to lift. I was also quite sleepy and unmotivated at first. But gradually these side effects decreased and after 2 months on the drug, I definitely feel much better. I take 20 mg at night, around 7 or 8 pm.
My sister (a nurse practitioner) said that while 20 mg is OK for some people, the most effective dose is usually 40 mg.
