Just wanted to give an update about my TCA trial...
I am feeling pretty good. I'm definately not depressed.
The first week and a half of side effects was HARSH and
difficult, I felt slightly ill--but that seems to have
passed. I've been taking 10 mg's of prozac along
with the desipramine and am slowly tapering off. This
will be my last week on prozac, and then it will be
just the desipramine. Already I have noticed things
are much better sexually. I have a lot more sensation
and it's not a major effort to have an orgasm. I am
guessing that it's going to get even better once the
prozac is completely out of my system....
The only problem that is still prevailing is constipation.
It's only been a little over 2 weeks, so I'm am REALLY
hoping that passes. I'm not sure about weight gain (I'm
guessing a little, but I'm also premenstrual so it
could be related to that).
If the constipation goes away, and I don't gain too much
weight, I just might have finally achieved what I thought
was impossible--mental health and a sex life too!Woo-Hoo--Cross your fingers for me!

Hi Tom--
The dose I'm at is 75 mg's...another thing I've
noticed is that my emotions aren't quite as
buffered as they were on prozac. Kind of scarey
and kind of cool too, though. I have that edge
back--sometimes I lose my temper quicker or get
my feelings hurt--but I don't feel depressed, and
I don't have the same low self esteemy, constant
demon thoughts that usually come with the depression.
It's been interesting...

Thanks for the follow-up Roo.
I'm glad for you, and I hope this keeps continuing. Desipramine, for me, undepressed my body, it came alive again. SSRIs undepressed my mind for just a few short weeks, and continued to numb my body. Let me know how it continues to go.

Did you go through the regular trial of several AD's (with no success) before you started on Desimpramine? I'm sort of gun shy after failing on everything in the newer class of meds (i.e. Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Serzone, Wellbutrin, Effexor, etc.). I'm uncertain of trying a TCA. I guess I'm curious if someone else is in the same boat and found success with an older med.

wellbutrin. Haven't tried everything, by any means,
but enough to be pretty frustrated by sexual side
effects, or antidepressants that make my depression
worse!
Give me another month or so before I can give you
a realistic viewpoint of whether it's working or
not. I've only been on it for 3 weeks, and only
on a full dose for 1 week...
So far, it's not feeling quite as good as prozac
for my depression--I feel a little more vulnerable
and insecure, but I haven't spiraled down. I saw
my p-doc today, and she said things should get better.
Definately no sexual side effects.
I'll keep you updated...

I also found that Prozac numbed my emotions. When I was on it, I couldn't cry even when it would have been appropriate to. Havent' found that to be the case with other meds (paxil, effexor, serzone).
This is the end of the thread.
