A little wine with your Nardil??

My pdoc has just given me a prescription for Nardil.

I'm pretty clear about the food restrictions with the exception of a few questions:

1) Are we allowed no wine?? I so love my glass of wine - it's my treat after the kids go to bed.
My doctor said vodka and whiskey only.

2) What about restaurant BBQ'd chicken (rotisseried)??
3) And restaurant grilled, broiled bbq'd steak??

and

4) Read earlier postings ... horrified to read about all of this weight gain. Any testimonials from people who haven't gained weight. Rick, I know you lost weight, that's encouraging. I'm of average height/weight. (My weight hasn't fluctuated in many, many years.)

Wine is fine along with all of the other things on your list.

My pdoc said the restrictions are greatly overstated. He said that the only wine to avoid is Chianti, although I've read elesewhere that even that is "O.K". The other "biggies", according to him, were aged cheese (I had several small nibbles of domestic blue with no problem) and tap beer. Basically, he said, avoid anything that is "trying to spoil", such as yeasty beer or aged meats including pepperoni. (According to my pdoc, prevalence of such foods in Europe is why there were so many more problems there before the tyramine connection was uncovered, and why Moclobemide is so heavily used). He also said that men rarely have any problems with any food (but should exercise the indicated cautions nonetheless). He said in 20 years of prescribing MAOI's, he only had one patient suffer a hypertensive crisis "and she was in good enough shape that she was talking to me on the phone from the ER waiting room".

2 more things:

Take heart, I have read posts in other groups by folks who have NOT gained weight on Nardil, including some like myself who lost weight. This does seem to be the minority, but those who didn't gain are probably less likely to post. Just don't talk yourself into the inevitibility of weight gain.

Also, I did read of one case of rotisserie chicken causing a hypertensive crisis. The conclusion was that the meat was probably spoiled. I would guess this is an unlikely event if you're eating at home or any remotely reputable restaurant. (Actually, I would hope you would avoid unreputable restaurants regardless of Nardil!)

Yup, it is. The original report of high tyramine levels in Chianti wine used an older method than the current gold standard (high-pressure liquid chromatography). The finding was never confirmed.

(BTW, I drink Chianti every now and then.)

About the weight gain, it doesn't happen to *everybody* and I think women may be more at risk. If you do find that you're gaining significant amounts of weight (*don't* obsess over it!), remember you can always ask to switch. Parnate doesn't cause weight gain (like, I don't think such a reaction has ever been reported, in nearly 40 years!)/.

The foods that I am careful about (that I can think of offhand, anyway):
-aged cheese
-tap beer
-sauerkraut
-soy products
-aged meat
-a couple of weird ones, like fava bean pods and banana peels

Also, liver seems to cause problems pretty often even though fresh liver is supposed to be safe. It may be that liver is especially prone to spoilage. Anyway, is it really so bad to have to give up liver?
