Paxil vs. Celexa

Posted by Nyree on January 5, 2000, at 14:58:08

I've been taking 30 mg. of Paxil for the past few years
and have done remarkably well on it, w/ the exception of
a few side effects, mostly weight gain and loss of
sexual desire/arousal. I recently heard about Celexa
and was trying to decide if it was worth switching from
Paxil (which works well for me) to Celexa in order to
decrease the side effects. I suffer from OCD and panic
disorders, and Paxil has literally changed my life, so
Im a wanting to be very informed about this decision.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Talk with your doc to see if you can ad Welbutrin to your mix. It might help out with the weigh issue (not indicated for weight loss) and from what I've read on these posts, the sexual issues might be resolved. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Best wishes and blessings,

I shudder at the thought of switching from a med that is working well. Celexa is similar yet different from paxil. It might not work as well and might come with other side effects equally troublesome. I think you would do well to try treating the side effects before considering a switch.

You could start with herbal. Ginkgo in doses of 120mg to 240mg a day for six weeks has been shown to improve all phases of sex, including desire, when taking antidepressants. The addition of wellbutrin, buspar or ritalin are also given for AD sexual side effects.

jamie
