Epilim and BPD

Posted by Lucy Amour on June 10, 2000, at 21:14:40

I'm hoping someone can help me. I am trying to find info on the med "Epilim" also known as sodium valproate. I have recently been prescribed this,I am on 400mg in the morning and 600mg at nite after building up to this amount over 1 month and know nothing about it except its meant to be kind of like lithium but its quite new. I have BPD and I am also on Aropax 20mg in the morning and Imovane 15mg at nite. I would really appreciate any feedback as I hate not knowing what I am taking. Also, is the mix I'm taking safe? Thanks!

James here...

In the states : Epilim = Depacote, Aropax = Paxil
and Imovane is a cyclopyrrolone hypnotic agent, ie
sleeping pill, don't know if there is a US brand.

Hi Lucy,
I've taken depakote (Epilim) several years as a mood stabilizer; it is an anti-convulsant and normally you have to get blood work done at regular intervals to check liver function and blood levels which determine dose. As long as my blood levels hover around 60, I don't have too many side effects. It works well in hypo/manic states for me but I feel worsens depression. When you say BPD, are you referring to borderline personality disorder or bipolar disorder? Just curious.

Hi Lucy,
Right now I'm taking depakote, neurontin (another anti-convulsant- which doesn't seem to worsen depression and is fairly calming- you might want to ask your pdoc), klonopin and risperdal (an atypical neuroleptic). I was dxed borderline when I was in my 20's in addition to bipolar, but find as I get older (30's) my symptoms aren't as intense. I'm going through a stressful time right now which has worsened my rages and cutting- the risperdal has helped me a great deal for those symptoms. I just hope you have a really good therapist- I swear that's as important as meds in BPD. Take care, Judy

I have just started taking epilim, I'm on 500mg a day to start. As far as I know it is a mood stabiliser - I have just been diagnosed as bipolar. It sometimes makes me collapse, like my legs can't hold me. I also take 300mg Efoxor a day - an antidepressant.
