Drugs like Zoloft and Effexor dramatically worsen my mood during the first few days I take them. I become litterally disgusted with everything, I devellop suicidal thoughts I wasn't having before and have revolting obssessions of self-mutilation. Thankfully it goes away after a few days when I segue into complete numbness and indifference. I am not currently on these drugs needless to say. Has anyone else felt this way on SSRIs and similar drugs.

Else:
I was just going to post a query to this effect. I have just switched to Prozac from Celexa (it wasn't controlling my depression) and have tried Wellbrutrin in the past. I stopped Wellbrutrin very quickly and am on the verge of stopping the Prozac quickly, too, for the same reason:
I am turning into a major bitch again.
I am irritable, and agitated and the smallest things are driving me insane.
It's so noticable, it's bizarre.
I've changed overnight on both of these drugs and I find this side effect to be unmanageable if it doesn't go away toot sweet.
What have you found?

I don't want anything to do with SSRIs anymore. My theory is, they just freeze all your emotions, good and bad and I guess that's o.k. if you're severely depressed--It's better to feel indifferent than to feel horrible, obviously--but as you begin to recover, it becomes increasingly frustrating to see that things are grey-er than they were before. I found they stripped me of all passion. And the whole time I was on Zoloft I frequently thought of suicide which had rarely been the case before. I actually did attempt suicide, even though I had been on Zoloft 100mg for 6 months. I'm not saying the Zoloft made me do it, but I am saying it certainly didn't help.Anyway I hate these drugs. At best they don't help and at worst they make me want to kill myself. However I do tend to have idiosyncratic reactions to drugs. I know most people don't feel that way on SSRIs. But they still suck.

I think you're just experiencing initial agitation from these drugs, due to the 5-HT Uptake inhibition. Do you get insomnia too?

>... Has anyone else felt this way on SSRIs and similar drugs.I'm on Paxil. The first week or two, I thought I felt a lot of effect - all sorts of goofy things. Mostly antidepressant - happy - optimism - energy. Had some insomnia. I've been telling myself that it was placebo effect - when the real antidepressant effect started, it was sortof different.
I still feel depressed sometimes, but I think the baseline has gone up - sometimes I feel absolutely giddy, haven't felt like that in years - and this is like 1/4 or 1/2 the time.
I'm happy enough to make jokes with people standing in line with me, and start conversations. I used to be Mister Sourpuss - I just wana pay for this shit and get out of here, lemme alone.
I'm not going to stop it unless there's some replacement. I'm at 50mg which is supposedly the max dosage, but I think 30mg was just as good. My Dr is adding in some Wellbrutrin... see how that goes.
