Ok, I have been in treatment for five years for an initial eating disorder and bipolar disorder. My doctor started me on zyprexa last January WITHOUT telling me if might cause weight gain. (Ok, I should've read the pamphlet). Now I've gained almost 20 pounds and I've taken myself off the meds. Is there anything anyone can tell me about why this has happened from this medication and will my weight come off now that I've taken myself off? I'm an aerobic instructor and a vegetarian so there is no other reason I should've gained this weight. Please help.

The weight will come off. And it should come off pretty rapidly -- just eat well and exercise regularly. I, too, was on Zyprexa and gained quite a bit of weight...I've been off for one month, and I've lost 12 pounds.
I don't know too much WHY it causes weight gain...but I think it makes you hypoglycemic (hyperinsulism or something), and your body wants to return to a normal sugar balance so you eat more...also, there is something to do with histimine but I don't know! sorry!
But don't give up! It sounds like you lead a pretty healhty lifestyle, so you shouldn't have a problem with losing the weight!
Hang in there!

>Thank you for the encouragement. It's been an incredibly frustrating few months. I've been off for 3 days now, and although my sleep is strange, I don't like the potential other side effects of zyprexa either. I'm glad you were able to shed the unwanted pounds. Congratulations!
