Well after my latest crash I got nervous and
decided to go back to my formula before I crashed
which meant dropping my Zyprexa dose to 10 mg from
15 mg and restarting Neurontin 300 mg TID.
I was taking Neurontin to help with tingling from
Klonopin withdrawl, but now I'm thinking that maybe
it was having an anti-depressant boost too? Any thoughts
here?Anyways its 2 days later and I'm back on
Planet John (hypomanic). It could be the combo of
the 2 med changes plus my latest Klonopin drop. Ugh, I can't wait
for this Klonopin taper to end so I can see where
my brain's thermostat is really at.My pdoc wanted me to up the Zyprexa to 20 mg when I told him I was
depressed, but It made me nervous and I did the opposite (dropped
back to 10 mg, the old formula). Am I making a mistake.
I tend to scramble when I get depressed.
Can too much Zyprexa poo-poo the mood?-John

Hi John,
For me klonopin has always had mood stabilizing qualities, so perhaps this withdrawal is causing you problems. Zyprexa is one of those funny meds that affect people differently- I find it very sedating at high doses (20mg) and 10 sounds about right. I never benefitted from Neurontin, even though I went up to 3600mg/day. I take it you're not enjoying your hypomanic state? Why did you go off the klonopin? (Sorry, missed a lot having a baby) Take care, Judy

Just an opinion, but I think for many bipolars the atypical AP's are destabilizing in the long run.Mitch

me into trouble at work. Also I already had 2 inevitable
depressive crashes which really stunk. :(I was taking Klonopin to treat chronic facial
neuralgia (tension headaches and other pains). I
found that Topamax also works and was addicted to
a high dose of Klonopin so it was time to give up
the Klonopin. It appears the Klonopin was
exerting a strong anti-manic effect since I was
full blown manic according to my pdoc during the
past month.Hope you and baby are doing well.
Best Regards,

Hi Mitch,What leads you to believe the APs are destabilizing?
I really would love to drop my Zyprexa and Neurontin
and narrow my medicines down to Topamax + Lamictal.
Less is more. I was taking the Zyprexa before I found
the Topamax. The Neurontin is just short term to help with
Klonopin withdrawl.-John

John, Just personal experience. They *work* great right after you take them, but there is a "rebound" effect they seem to have after they begin to "unoccupy" the D2 receptors, which feels worse than you did before you take them. Even the conventionals would do that to me. I remember small doses of Stelazine would make me feel better for most of the day, but in the evening I would start getting very anxious-like a mixed state, yuck! Of course, this could all just be akathisia. I remember when I took Seroquel-I really noticed it. I would feel pretty mellow during the day and then at nite just before my next dose I would get this "rocketing" like hypomania. So, my pdoc just told me to try to get by without antipsychotics. I know for some that might not be easy to do.

May I ask who suggested you were addicted to klonopin? Were you increasing your dose on your own?, getting it from sources other than your pdoc? If not, perhaps dependence is the better word, and if it kept you from mania it was doing it's job. My normal dose is 6mg/day (which is not uncommon), although I'm nursing and not taking it now- I do miss it a great deal.
