Has anyone out there had any experience with celexa for anxiety/depression. My Dr. just switched me from prozac to celexa and I am wondering if anyone has anything to say about the efficacy of celexa or any of the side affects. Thanks.

Hi Susie,
I think celexa is supposed to be more selective on serotonin than prozac, so might have fewer side effects. Everyone is different though, the only thing to do is to wait and see how you respond. Why did your doctor switch you?
I've been on both, on celexa now. For me they're about the same in terms of effectiveness, but prozac gave me bad nightmares and was a little too "speedy" for me. I like the celexa pills because they're easy to split in half.

Celexa increased my anxiety at first, but that wore off. It also made me yawn a lot. My pdoc added wellbutrin for energy. I've been on Celexa for a year and it's been really helpful for me.

Tabitha,
I agree about halving them. My dosage was just upped to 60mg so I have been doing a lot of that. I am not sure why he switched me. I was switched when I switched Dr.'s. I am also on Seroquel for anxiety, I just started that a couple of days ago. How long have you been on Celexa, I cant remember if you already said. Have you had any side affects?
Susie.

Susie,
I've been on Celexa for a couple of years now. I have the usual SSRI-type side effects -- insomnia, loss of sex drive, loss of appetite. I take Neurontin and melatonin at night which helps with the insomnia, and just put up with the others.
Compared to other ADs I've taken the side effects aren't too bad.

I've been on 40 mg Celexa for 2 and 1/2 years with very good results on both anxiety and depression. The tiredness side effects are greatly helped by Ginkgo Biloba (120 mg twice a day for 240 mg total). The sexual side effects are greatly helped by 10 mg Yohimbine taken 1 or 2 hours before sex. If you prefer to take it every day, the dose is 5 mg per day. The side effects are generally very mild but Ginkgo can be bad if you have bleeding problems and Yohimbine might increase blood pressure in some people.
Keep in mind that a new version of Celexa (called Lexapro in the US) will be on the market around the end of August. This version caused less fatigue than Celexa in clinical trials.
This is the end of the thread.
