side effects: feeling cold, yawning or stretching?

Posted by katekite on July 4, 2002, at 18:02:35

So I feel hot most of the time...hormonal thing (working on that)... I notice sometimes I'll suddenly start to feel better and I get goose bumps and find at the same time I yawn, stretch etc, without feeling particularly sleepy.

I searched in the archives and found the ssris sometimes do this, and that its maybe serotonin 1a receptors (but for me a serotonin 1a agonist (buspar) has almost the opposite effect, so not sure how that works).

Is anyone on a med that causes these side effects? In a good way or in a bad way?

Hi. SSRI's, especially Celexa, wreak havoc with my thermoregulation. I had terrible chills on Celexa (in addition to apathy, fatigue, prostration, etc.). All I wanted to do on Celexa was stay under a big thick quilt, even on hot days.

Same here on Prozac, especially when I was on higher doses (>60mg/day). At 10mg, the thermoregulation problems go away, but I *still* yawn and stretch the day away...

I'm glad that my doc and I figured out that my primary diagnosis was ADD, not depression... Goodbye to all of the weird side-effects of SSRIs, hello to the peripheral stimulation of the pstims. At least I'm not yawning anymore... ;)

Yes, I know exactly what you are saying. It may very well mean the med(s) you are on are working well. I very much find when I get my med formula right, I physically feel both relaxed and alert at the same time. Especially just before I sleep, as I will 'drift' into sleep, rather than lay tossing and turning.

Plus, this may relate to your stretching, but I get very achy in many of my joints (I think this is just part of the depression), and they don't feel so painful when my meds are working well, and I feel well.

I think you are on the right path. I hope it all goes well for you.

Take care,
Jay

The only med I'm on is .125 mg twice a day of klonopin, for past month now. The chills, yawning and stretching are spontaneous things that my body does at odd times of the day -- related surely to my hormones being screwed up. The temperature of the room will seem to drop suddenly (but not according to the thermostat). Pretty weird, eh?

Interesting so far that it's the ssris which are relatively serotonin selective.

I do know that increased serotonin shuts off cortisol to some degree, so maybe what I'm feeling is serotonin kicking in and cortisol dropping... I can't imagine its that simple, but it's tempting to think that way.

Thanks Bekka, Xevious, Jay....

Anyone else?

I also froze on Celexa. It was incredible. I absoloutely couldn't get warm. It started to improve about 48 hours after stopping Celexa, at which point I reverted to my *normal* level of cold-bloodedness.

Effexor made me yawn a lot, without being sleepy. Come to think of it, I yawn kind of a lot now. But not like when I was trying Celexa.
