STIFF neck?! Please help!!!

Posted by JonW on August 11, 2002, at 15:19:45

Hi,

I have a stiff neck and it is most noticeable when I am seated. I thought it might be a side-effect of Geodon so I have stopped it but I still have a stiff neck. I am also withdrawing from Nardil and Neurontin. Could this be a symptom of withdrawal? I also recently started taking a high dose of omega3s (8 OmegaBrite caps/day). Can Omega3 cause this? It is possible that I have simply hurt my neck, but it's been more than a week. Anyone have any ideas?

Alright, it has to be said, this is a pain in the neck!!! Sorry, but you knew it was coming... :)

Thanks,
Jon

Whew John!,

You are withdrawing from *all* meds? You are still on the Nardil and Neurontin, right (still tapering)? It does sound like some EPS from the Geodon. One way you might be able to tell is to try 25mg of Benadryl and see if your neck relaxes. There isn't any MAOI contraindication in taking Benadryl that I am aware of (the label doesn't warn against it).

don't hesitate to go to the ER
if you think you need to,

Mitch

Jon,

I just checked the monograph for Parnate, and it does mention neck stiffness as a possible sign of raised blood pressure, and that it should be reported promptly. I get significantly raised blood pressure from Effexor and my neck and upper shoulders feel stiff right now! I would make a visit to the ER or an urgent care center in your neighborhood, just to be safe. If you try that Benadryl, make sure it is "plain" Benadryl, not mixed up with decongestants in a cough preparation (because of the sympathomimetic effects). Also, it isn't wise to abruptly discontinue Parnate or Neurontin due to agitation that can result-especially since you say you have stopped the Geodon.

hope this info helps some,

Mitch

Thanks for the info, Mitch. Yeah, this is my 4th day off of Nardil completely and I've been tapering my Neurontin every 4 days or so from 3600mg by 600mg. When I went from 30mg to 15mg of Nardil it was hell so I guess this is just another step down. I called my pdoc and my internist and I'm going to see my internist tomorrow. I also have a low-grade fever. I was reading about Geodon getting in the way of body temperature so I wonder if this doesn't explain it. Tylenol brought my fever down, but my head still feels like it was run over by a train. I suppose this is withdrawal, but my appointment tomorrow should confirm it for sure. If it weren't for the neck, I'd just accept this as another war with withdrawal. I hope things turn out okay and I can go back on Geodon because it seemed to be very helpful.

Thanks again,
Jon

Sounds like you have it lined out.. good luck (nm)

Don't mean to scare at all... just have to say it anyways... stiff neck and fever could be beginnings of say, viral meningitis... although you should by rights have a headache too. I know you will anyways: but monitor your fever and see a doc if the stiff neck gets worse at all. -- kate

That gave me a sore neck when I started some drugs. I'd catch myself doing a little during the day and I think I did it even more in my sleep.
