Anyone know why Buspar increases my anxiety, I thought it was supposed to be an anti anxiety drug?

I don't know why, but it made me much more anxious as well. I was also on Effexor and lithium at the time, so I thought maybe it was a serotonin overload (that's about the extent of the sophistication of my understanding about these things).

Hi Denise,
It will do so because it is serotonergic though very specific and serotonergic drugs do that to some people, some ssris are now plied as tratments for anxiety ie cipramil and venlafaxine even though they do this for the first week or two for some people.
I tried it for 3 months and it did nothing but make me dizzy. If your problem is somatic rather than psychic inderal la was and still is great for me and xanax is the champ but you'll be very lucky to get that over here.

Yes I think my problem is somatic, if by that you mean that it is not triggered off by external factors. What is inderal la?
My psychiatrist wont't prescribe xanax but he will prescribe Zyprexa which has truly been a life saver for me.

I found it made my heart pound. Though I didn't have an emotional reaction of anxiety, and it actually decreased my avoidance of anxiety-producing situations, the pounding heart bothered me so much it kept me awake half the night. This effect never went away for me and I went off Buspar.
