Best Anti-Psychotic for Elderly?

Posted by fachad on March 17, 2003, at 18:42:47

Any opinions on the best/safest AP for the elderly?

My mom is disoriented and delusional after a recent hospitalization. I had hoped that she would become more clear and oriented after she got back home, but she is still confused, hostile, paranoid, and has delusions.

The hospital had put her on risperdone 0.25mg but it was discontinued at my request with the idea that if she did not get better after coming home we would re-visit the idea of APs.

I remember hearing something about Seroqual being especially helpful in elderly people - any ideas on other APs?

I hear your plea. Dementia is so common in the elderly-I did a paper on it. We are trying to get my grandmother on Zoloft, her doc is too trying, and she just won't take it. So, not only are the symptoms hard to treat sometimes, the concern of an elderly person to follow through in taking a prescribed med to help these symptoms is also a concern:-(
Try this:

hope it helps. All the best, Kristen

Although this is not related to your current situation I remember a while back when you talked about sleep meds for yourself. What happened with your trimipramine? What do you currently take? Sorry, but what is your dx? Thank you
