what if nothing works

Posted by jonh kimble on March 25, 2003, at 15:43:12

I cannot stop being obsessed by the thought that nothing will ever help me. I guess my diagnosis would be life long dysthymia with major depression episodes, anhedonia, severe social phobia (afraid of interpersonal sensitivity rather than just being afraid of people) apathy, no concentration, etc... my new pdoc suspects bi polar as there have been a few times when all this disapeared. i have so many times thought that something would help only to be disapointed. is there hope left? im just starting lamictal 12.5mgs and going up, 300mgs seroquel first week as well, and I may be able to convince my doc to add mirapex tomorow. i really see my probs being chemically related. if anyone could offer any hope i would be so relieved. thanks

If something doesn't work, you move on to something new until you find something that works for you. Have faith that medicine is advancing and new meds are being approved each year and one or a combination of some will work for you. Good luck. I know the feeling.

I would continue with the Lamictal thing you have gotten started on and see where that goes. If you are bipolar-then you suddenly have a bunch of new and different treatment options to check out--hang in there.

Unfortunately alot of it IS trial and error. It took me 14 years to finally find a med combo that works for me. Lamictal has been wonderful for me. I take 100 mgs. a day of it. I combine that with Remeron (for depression) and a small dose of Zoloft for anxiety. Between the three I feel as close to normal as I think I am ever gonna feel. Don't give up, you will find the right combo, it may take awhile, but you will. I hope you feel better soon!

John,

I know exactly what you mean, I'm still searching. Fortunately I have 10mg of Zyprexa to fall back on when I'm really feeling like I want to kill myself and this gets me out of the deep end. This may be something you might want to try, it definately quells any suicidal thoughts, if you have those.

Hi,

You say that new meds are being approved every year but I haven't seen any indication of this. Where are they all? What happened to the Selegiline patch? TMS, they seemed to have been doing studies on that for years and years and yet it's gone very quiet, VNS what happened to that?

These CRF Antagonists and substance P inhibitors seem to be taking forever. Whenever I do a search on any different treatments, all the threads seem to stop at the year 2000. Where are all of these new treatments?

PhRMA News Release (FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE)
New Medications in Development

SURVEY FINDS 99 MEDICINES IN DEVELOPMENT FOR MENTAL ILLNESS

Washington D.C., Jan. 13, 2003 - Pharmaceutical companies are working on 99 potential treatments for a variety of mental illnesses - from Alzheimer's disease to depression to schizophrenia to dependence on alcohol - according to a new survey by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA). All of the medicines are either in human clinical testing or awaiting approval by the Food and Drug Administration.

"Over the past half century, pharmaceutical research has helped transform mental illnesses from misunderstood causes of shame and fear into highly treatable conditions," said PhRMA President and CEO Alan F. Holmer. "Still, more than 50 million Americans suffer from some form of mental illness, and these illnesses cost our economy more than $180 billion a year. The potential medicines in the pipeline promise to reduce the toll of these illnesses and allow more people to lead healthier, happier, more productive lives."

The medicines in development include:

17 for dementias, including Alzheimer's disease, which affects nearly half of all Americans 85 and older;
25 for depression, which affects more than 20 million Americans;
25 for substance abuse disorders, including dependence on alcohol, tobacco or illicit drugs;
18 for anxiety disorders, which affect more than 13 percent of adults between the ages of 18 and 54; and
12 for schizophrenia, which strikes some 2.2 million adults each year.

Other potential medicines target attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, eating disorders, premenstrual disorders and sleep disorders. For more information on medicines in development for mental illness, go to www.phrma.org.

The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) represents the country's leading research-based pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, which are devoted to inventing medicines that allow patients to live longer, healthier, and more productive lives. The industry invested more than $30 billion in 2001 in discovering and developing new medicines. PhRMA companies are leading the way in the search for new cures.

Sorry, I am not following the studies as closely as you that I can say specifically what is new and what is happening out there with drug companies. It just has been my experience that in the last 20 years of taking medication on and off, there always seems to be new ones to try. From what I know, some studies take 10 years until the medicines are approved. I was once in a study and the mecicine was great- it a made such an improvement in my life. I heard it was never approved! I could be wrong about my statement, but my doctor said that to me I like believe he was telling me the truth.
