4 days I took Anafranil
2 days- 25mg nocte
2- days 50mg - nocte
SEVERE dystonic reaction (severe depression with cognitive impairement, terribele derealization, phobic anxiety. Can't leave house without Xanax.
Possible allergic reaction (itching, rash, etc etc.)2 days off Anafranil, today re-started Nardil 15mg. Approx 64 hours after anafranil final dose. Saw dr. Re-started Nardil 15mg 30mins ago. Periactin on hand. Just bought Periactin. Going back to dr now to check vitals. Dr think it should be OK given short duration on Anafranil. Got Periactin on hand as I said.
This is hell.
Took 2mg Xanax today 5mg Mogadon last night.
Helped derealization and anxiety.
In the middle of uni - total mess. OPINIONS NOW PLEASE!
Will the 2 day washout suffice...how long for Nardil to kick in - I've only been off it 17 days. Maybe it will come back into action REAL quick cause of short time off.HELP!!

I can't help much except to say that having taken the Anafranil for *only* TWO days should NOT do irreperable (spelling?) harm. I also did not react well to Anafranil and stopped it after a few days, maybe a week, and was FINE (meaning the side effects I'd had from it were gone) within 24 hours of being off it.
It seems to me that the two main meds for OCD - Anafranil and Luvox - have some incredibly strong and bothersome effects that do NOT go away like with other meds.
What does nocte mean?
HANG IN THERE, stay in CLOSE TOUCH with your pdoc and regular doctor if that's who you were referring to about the vital signs, and you will be FINE.

Sorry to hear that ace, damn - what a bummer. As a fellow OCDer... I feel your pain. Hang in there, good luck.

I took it for 4 days. I agree no long term harm but the misery I am feeling is terrible.
I also did not react well to Anafranil and stopped it after a few days, maybe a week, and was FINE (meaning the side effects I'd had from it were gone) within 24 hours of being off it.
Anafranil has a half-life of approx 20hrs. This means after 24 hours there still was quite a bit of it in your system. I assume you were on a low dose.

MAOIs are THE drugs for me. Once stabilized I will try to augment Nardil or go for Parnate. This relapse prooved to me the brilliance Nardil was providing. I have to count my blessings not my hurts from now on.> What does nocte mean?
nocte means 'take at night'...'mane' means take at morning.

Not a pdoc! they revolt me (90% anyway)!

I to didn't know just how well my anxiety was held under control by Nardil until the last few day's of being off it. I forgot just how bad it was... I guess worse than the s/e's but I got to give Parnate a shot before I would ever get back on Nardil
good luck man

With Nardil I atleast felt like part of society, now I am back to being stuck in the house....
Oh well it's only temporary :)

You are most likely suffering serotonin syndrome. You can't play with MAOIs and potent serotonin reuptake inhibitors. It is necessary to wait 2 full weeks after your last dose of Nardil before beginning a drug like Anafranil. The actions of Nardil do not leave the body quickly - longer than Parnate.

Ace,
HOW R U? I hope you're doing better and better being OFF the Anafranil, and I'm sorry it caused you such misery.
I didn't know that Anafranil has a half-life of approx 20hrs, so that after 24 hours there still was quite a bit of it in my system. But you assumed correctly, I was on a low dose, with the pdoc at the time planning to titrate me up if I could handle it (which I couldn't!)
I have a very good friend for whom MAOIs are also THE drugs (she said she has tried over 20 a-d's with no success until PARNATE).
Thanks for explaining that nocte means 'take at night'... I thought that MIGHT be the case because I was thinking of "nocturnal".
Thanks for also letting me know that 'mane' means take at morning!
Good luck 2 U.

Hi Ace:
I have been following your posts and I am so sorry that you are going through such a hard time trying to find the best med.
What I don't understand is that you took the Anafranil for only 4 days and the side effects sound horrible. I thought that we had to give it a little longer, on most meds, for our bodies to adjust and that most of the side effects would disappear.
Is this not true? If we find it horrible after a 4 days or so do the side effects not start to diminish or are we supposed to stop the med?
Good luck!

> What I don't understand is that you took the Anafranil for only 4 days and the side effects sound horrible.I know! The depression was unbelievable! But I'm in the middle of uni - studying heavy stuff like chemistry, can't waste time!! Had to get off it - just couldn't concentrate. It is common knowledge that Anafranil can cause a aggravation of depression in early therapy.
I thought that we had to give it a little longer, on most meds, for our bodies to adjust and that most of the side effects would disappear. You are correct - the fact that Anafr. made depression so bad means it could have made it a lot better in 2 weeks - like I said I'm too busy at uni to screw around. It was foolish to change during uni, looking at the situation in retrospect.
> Is this not true? If we find it horrible after a 4 days or so do the side effects not start to diminish or are we supposed to stop the med?
Very much a personal decision. Myself, if I were not at uni I would have stuck with it for a longer time, but I need to study.

> You are most likely suffering serotonin syndrome.I have to disagree. At that point return of my sx was the main prob - this indicates that my sx (could) result from excessive 5HT stimulation. Serotonin syndrome symptoms were almost non existent at that point. True, I did have mental status change, but there was no diaphoresis, myoclonus, hyperthermia etc etc. To be diagnoses as having the syndrome one must have unequivocal somatic complaints IN ADDITION to mental status changes.

I disagree. Many scholarly monographs indicate 7 days is enough. Resynthesis can occur within 7 days for a lot of people. But I agree that 14 days is best. But I was in a real hurry!
The actions of Nardil do not leave the body quickly - longer than Parnate.
