Bad experience with Seroquel(sp?)

Posted by jay on September 2, 2003, at 5:27:15

I don't know if this can apply to others, but I was switched from Zyprexa to Seroquel(sp?)and had a really bad experience. Yes, it knocked me out (even just on 25mg's), but I couldn't get a deep, restful sleep. I had all sorts of weird, disturbing and vivid dreams on this. Then I would be napping on and off like a zombie all of the next day. It felt like the medication was 'randomly' working, and it had nowhere near the 'stable' effects Zyprexa and even Risperdal bring to me. It actually seems to work strongly against my Prozac, and I wonder if it's the concentration of serotonin 5ht blocking that made Seroquel difficult for me. It actually reminds me of what it felt like taking Remeron at times, and I wonder if they share similar properties. It seems like Seroquel is to antipsychotics as what Buspar is to antianxiety meds. Maybe it's just a personal chemistry thing...I don't know. I wonder if others have had the same experience? Oh..and also I felt very, very depressed and sometimes aggitated on the med.

i don't possess the requisite knowlege to comment on biochemical actions of seroquel or its combination with other drugs, but i will say that the "weird, disturbing, and vivid dreams" have abated somewhat over time; even though i have gradually increased my dosage to 50mg b.i.d. i don't know, maybe my subconscious was just "cleaning house" or maybe i'm getting used to them. i've always had an active dream life, but i know that i don't wake up disturbed by them like when i first began taking it. i cannot tolerate any ssri's at all, as they make me extremely agitated, emotional, and depressed. i'm on no other meds (except the occasional xanax). i don't know if this helps or not. best of luck to you.

Hi,
I also take prozac and transitioned from Zyprexa to Seroquel (with really great results). Maybe you are not taking enough of the Seroquel? How much Zyprexa were you taking? 25mg is a very tiny dose of Seroquel...I take 600mg at bedtime and 100mg at breakfast and lunch (the daytime doses really did kill any anxiety that I was having). By the way, I am not schizophrenic, I have BP I. I use the Seroquel with Depakote and Lamictal as my mood stabilizing "team".

Just my two cents worth! Hope that you are feeling better soon!
Dane =)

I changed from Zyprexa 10mg , to Seroquel 100mg
for me It was a very good change , no weight gain , improvement in my anxiety , and I needed a lower dose , comparing to zyprexa , to feel well . I had any problems that you are telling us. Just I had drownsiness ,thats why I took it in the nights
Good luck

Hi Jay:

When I first went to my pdoc for my anxiety, I was subscribed Serequol and Lexapro. First time ever on AD's. Anyway, I took the Seroquel (25mg) and it knocked me out, too!!

I went to the gym right after taking it, and felt totally dizzy and zombie-like. Then, I went home and slept! That was the first and last time I took it. I have a son that I had to be alive for.

Actually, I have taken about 5mg. a couple of times before bed when I couldn't sleep, but that was it because it made me really irritable, too. Now, I just take the Lexapro, and am doing very well with just that.

I don't think you'd want to go up in your dose if 25mg knocks you out. Maybe take a lower dose and increase it gradually??? Just a thought.

Good Luck and know how you feel.
Arrianna

Hi Jay,
Sorry you had a bad experience with seroquel. Hope the next drug treats you better!

I take 50 mgs. & it seems to help me with racing thoughts (bipolar), etc. It did take some getting used to because it caused some kind of dizzyness (drop in bp) when standing just the first few days. Makes me sleepy too. I think when I've taken more though, it was a bit sedating. I don't remember well...Cheers.
