Hi,
I have been on generic Prozac for several months. It seems that the effectiveness of it has been fading. I would like to know is it possible that if I switch to another brand of generic Prozac and I would get the effectiveness again?
Thanks.

Sisyphus - If the generic company is reputable, there should be no problem. In Canada, every lot of generic or name brand drugs produced has to test within 5% of the labelled strength through to the expiry date. Changing back to Prozac™ (fluoxetine) probably will not help (you, nor your pocketbook).
If this fading continues you may be experiencing SSRI poop-out. Although, quite often after taking an SRI-like drug there are times (sometimes hours, sometimes days, occasionally weeks) when a person will feel "blah" (anhedonic). If the anhedonia ("blahs") continues for more than a couple weeks it is time to call the doc. He/she will probably try raising the dose first (if applicable). This is quite often successful.
If you haven't noticed improvement in about a month after dose increase, then you are probably experiencing poop-out. Yeah, I know that another month is a long time, but any new drug you try is going to take that long to work anyway. Besides, you know that you have experienced some relief with the Prozac™, the same cannot be said for a new mood modifier.

I have tried two different brands generic prozac and I could tell a difference between them. I would try another generic. I think it might help.

Add 1mg of folic acid to your prozac.
This vitamin has been shown to turn
prozac non responders into responders. It has also turned partial responces into
full remission. There are actually quite
a few studies that confirm the initial
findings.Good Luck

No, not the whole complex.
Folic acid is one of the b vitamins. It is found it vegetables and fruits and not so much in whole grains. You could take the whole complex, but I advise against this because certain b vitamins such as choline may actually perpetuate depression.
Anyhow, I strongly advise you to try just folic acid (1mg) a day with your prozac. I think you will notice improvement in a week. Folic acid is extremely cheap.
Good Luck

There is a group of psychiatrists that think ssri poop out is actually caused by depleted levels of folic acid. Again, I will try and find the study.
best of luck
