Topimax and estrogen

Posted by alanna on September 4, 2001, at 8:45:24

Hi everyone, I'm new to this site and I am hoping someone can help me with this... I've been taking 60mgs of topimax for the past three months along with one celexa tablet each morning (20 mg I believe). My mood is good. I am loosing weight and am relatively happy with the drug - except I had the worst hangover ever this weekend and forgot the word for dryer (I keep loosing words?!) Anyway, my real concern is the medical info that came from my drugstore said topimax can affect the viability of the "pill". My doctor didn't tell me this and when asked he said it could leach estrogen and I should ask my family doctor to switch me to a higher estrogen pill.

I take the pill because I have Poly-cystic-overian-syndrome (PCOS) and am prone to ovarian cists and a variety of other problems. I have discovered I cannot tolerate the high dose pill either (and my family dr. doesn't think it is best for PCOS) So, what I want to know is if Topimax leaches estrogen when taken at a low level of 60mg/day.

Since none of my doctors seem to have any idea I was hoping someone might know. I don't want to get pregnant or grow additional cysts because of a mood stabalizer.

Thanks!
Alanna

I don't know anything about the estrogenic effects of these things, but I do know that losing words may very well be an effect of Topamax. I've heard lots about odd neurological affects of Topamax, and word-finding difficulties is one of the more common ones with psychiatric meds.

I'd suggest you talk to an ob-gyn or even a hormone-doctor (endocrinologist?), cuz it sounds like the interaction is important and is probably out of the scope of your psychiatrist's expertise.

Luck...

I agree with sl, My experience with topamax was appropriate to its nick name, dope a max. The effects on estrogen absorbson vary. I am on estogens for menopause, and was concerned about the interaction. In me, it is the opposit, I can reduce the amount if the psych med is causeing an increase in estrogens absorbson. Getting a second and third opinion about your other situations is important. Good luck and keep us posted.

Another source of drug interaction is your very friendly Pharmasist. He sees a lot and mine has helped me a lot and is always available. A quick call may allieviate alot of your concern

just an additional note: I am on triestrogen progestrogen combination: estrone .175, estrodiol 1.25 and estriol 1.3. Progesterone 100mg. As I completely forgot to take it for ten days (spaced out putting it in my weekly pill box) and didnot notice difference (a lower hotflash) naturopathic said, the compounding pharmacy may not be doing a good job and may try compounded cream from a different place. /both of those I had never considered....
