Treating Blushing by ETC

Posted by sisyphus on September 30, 2003, at 8:06:05

I read some information about treating blushing by ETC from the book Understanding Shyness, P. 221. Can anybody comment on it? Are there any side effects? Thanks a lot.

"Surgical treatment to blushing

"A more radical surgical treatment has recently been developed to reduce blushing and sweating. A short operation interrupts the sympathetic ganglion nerve in the chest and this affects sympathetic signals to the blood vessels in the face. The procedure is carried out under a general anaesthetic and involves a keyhole (endoscopic) surgical technique where two small incisions are made in the area of the armpit. The technical term for this procedure is endoscopic thoracic sympathicotomy (ETC). "

I have blond/red hair, and fair skin...so I find blushing a BIG problem...leading to anxiety, etc.

Try a beta-blocker like propranolol, first. These meds work wonders for blushing.

How long does the effects of Propranol last? 3x daily? Also, I'm about to start Klonopin... do you know if it helps blushing, etc. or just the mental part of anxiety?

Propranolol comes in an extended release form -- brand name Inderal LA (60mg, 80mg, etc.) I find Inderal La 60mg completely prevents me from blushing....4mg of Klonopin paled in comparison to Inderal. You may find that 10 mg of Inderal is effective...

Thank you very much for your information on this surgery.

If you don't mind, would you please state some side effects on you by this surgery?

Best Regards.

sisyphus,
some of my side effects, loss of thermoregulation of my body, can only sweat from chest down, fatigue, confused thinking, anxiety, depression, can not tolerate heat or cold, joint pain, restless sleep, loss of physical capacity, cold hands and feet, underarm odor which i never had till after surgery. with blushing you stand a real good possibility of aquireing severe facial flushing after surgery. alot of drs. are now advising against surgery for facial blushing because of side effects. this surgery needs to be stoped totally. there are so many that have been left disabled after surgery. check out this forum at.http://pub157.ezboard.com/betsandreversals
feel free to ask any more questions you have
