Getting pizza withdrawal symptoms-Help!

Posted by cubbybear on October 5, 2003, at 6:22:37

I've seen numerous posts regarding the new and improved food guidelines for MAOI users. I just want to confirm this with as many of you experts as possible:
Is it fully safe to have a pan pizza (small individual) at Pizza Hut with only mozarella cheese (no sausage) about once a week?

I don't know the link (maybe someone will have it), but a few years ago there was a test on quite a few different food types and the amount of tyramine each contained. One of which was Pizza Hut I believe, or at least pizza from "major chains". It was reported that even with pepperoni there was no tyramine or very little.

To cut to the chase, I have had pizza from Pizza Hut with pepperoni with no ill effects. I suppose the sausage might be ok but I really don't know. The key is to avoid smaller "gourmet" type places where you don't know what they use- a combination of cheeses for example. I hope someone knows where that study is, as it lists several different types of food and you can read it for yourself. I use Nardil, by the way.

Hey,

I suffered this too when I trialed Parnate - the dreaded pizza withdrawals. These are said to be worse than heroin withdrawals anecdotally.

I had spontaneous hypertensive episodes while on Parnate, so I had to go back on the pizza as my primary antidepressant. Not as effective as Parnate for depression, but a nice side-effect profile - except for the weight gain.

I've read your post a few times, and still don't get it. Are you saying that the pizza actually caused your hypertensive episodes or not? And if so, could you recall exactly what cheese(s) or other foods were in it?

Should be okay...try having just a little first and see how you feel. Trust me, you'll know right away if it's a bad combination...

Not only is it safe - but you can eat a whole pizza from Pizza Hut. The Pizza thing is a myth. I've talked to 5 psych docs about this. the only thing you have to watch out for is GOURMET pizzas -at restaurants - one's that used AGED cheeses. I have three reseach studies around here somehwere examining the content of Pizza Hut and Dominos - conclusion = they're perfectly safe for those on MAOIs. Why? Because they use FRESH mozzarella.

Honeslty - I'mon 90 mg of Nardil and eating a Pizza Hut pizza right now.

Jerry = pizza lover

Cubbybear,

Sorry, my post was a lame attempt at being humorous. Looking at it now, it does seem confusing.

My hypertensive episodes were absolutely spontaneous. I adhered to the diet religiously while on Parnate.

I was just commiserating with you about the pizza withdrawals, because I did not partake of that beloved food while on Parnate!

I hope Parnate works wonders like it has for you in the past!

Best,

Matt

Happy eating, and thanks for the info, except that I realized something--I'm living in Thailand--and although the pizzas and cheese always seemed fresh when I had them in the past, I wonder if the cheese they import is totally fresh. That's a question that no one on this board can help me with. I'll have to ask them in Thai and hope for the best, I guess.
