well, i saw the doc today and she put me on nortriptyline. i've never been on a TCA, but i've been on everthing else - ssri, snri, mood stabalizers, stimulants, maoi, anti-psychotics. none of them have helped much, or if they did they pooped. she said if this doesn't help, she is going to recommend ECT. i feel pretty hopeless. after so many failed trials, it's difficult to see any possibility of feeling better. i'm just feeling beaten down by the constant anhedonia and lifelessness. any experience with nortriptyline would be appreciated.

In reply to starting Nortriptyline (Pamelor), any experience? , posted by craig allen on October 7, 2003, at 16:51:15
it makes sense to try a TCA if you've never tried one before. There's a lot more rationale to trying a new class of drug than mechanically exhausting all the possibilities in a given class.
That being said, i think nortriptyline is a powerful antidepressant. it has worked for me for well over a year now. I have a complex kind of depression- I feel 'deactivated' and my sleep becomes terribly disturbed, appetite disappears, and anxiety takes over. It's kept most of these symptoms in check. I also take Strattera and buspirone, for the ADHD and anxiety. I have had lifelong depression and I would call it 'severe.' If there's anything specific you would like to know about nortriptyline I would be happy to answer.

Craig Allen,
I was on Nortriptyline for about 1 and 1/2 years after ECT treatments. It worked great for me and no antidepressants had worked for me before. Constipation is a problem with that med. Currently I take Celexa and Seroquel. I, too, was a lifelong depressive but have been in remission now for two whole years!!!

thanks mimi. why the switch to celexa? and how much seroquel do you take? i had a great response to seroquel at 12.5mg (tiny dose i know), but it only lasted 4 days. anyhow, this is my second day on the nortriptyline and my mouth has been dry all day. not much mood improvement so far. i'll give it some time.
