Sam e Sexual Side-effects

Posted by College on November 18, 2003, at 4:12:38

I have had great success taking Sam e for depression and it has also helped my anxiety greatly. However, I am experiencing a serious lack of labido and sexual performance that directly corresponds to my level of Sam e. Anyone else out there experience this or know if this is common? Any suggestions on what I can do to regain my sex drive? Thanks in advance.

Sexual side effects are not considered to be a result of SAM-e. You are the first person who I have heard this from. But drugs affect people differently so I guess it's possible.

You might want to add yohimbine to the SAM-e; or switch to Wellbutrin. If you have health insurance with drug coverage, Wellbutrin is a whole lot cheaper than SAM-e. It usually does not have sexual side effects.

Hi! From what I understand, Sam E helps with serotonin production and/or maintenance in the cells(?). Therefore, it's going to have the same effects as the SSRI's which definitely keep emotions and feelings on an even keel - making it harder to orgasm as well as even feel like your in the mood. Lots of posts on ideas to overcome this problem, you could do a search. It comes back for some people after a few months, for others it doesn't.

Good luck and I'm happy to hear the Sam E is giving you some peace :-)

To assume that SAM e is going to function just like an SSRI just because it has seratonergic action is flawed.

That is not to say College is experiencing these side effects.

Hi, how is the rest of your mood/life? Are you experiencing any other signs or syptoms or depression? Has anything "happened" in your life that might have upset the balance a little bit. I believe the SSRIs have an anticholinergic effect--that's what's responsible for the side effects. Am I right here? I didn't think that SAMe functioned in the same way and that was the benefit of taking it--it wouldn't affect one's sex drive, among other things. I'm just wondering if it could be something else...and hey, sometimes our dex drives wax and wane *naturally*...

Let me know,
Karen
