Anyone heard of Zyprexa used for pain?

Posted by maryhelen on January 13, 2004, at 19:11:16

I have a friend of mine, whose doctor has precribed Zyprexa for the chronic pain she is in. He is afraid of her getting dependent on pain medication. Although I have never taken Zyprexa, I don't remember seeing any thread about this and I was surprised when she told me what he had prescribed for her.

I told her I would ask here for her. She already weighs 225 lb. and I told her one thing that I have heard, fairy consistently, that their can be a big weight gain while taking Zypreza.

Has anyone ever heard of this. I am also wondering about her doctor putting her on any medication that would put a lot of weight on her.

She is not being treated for any type of depession, bi polar or anything related.

Maryhelen...

I was on a high dose of Zyprexa for over 2 years and gained over 50 pounds. Depending on your weight before initiating therapy, this could be a serious health problem. Zyprexa doesn't have this effect on everyone, but trying to change my lifestyle, eat less, and exercise more did nothing to take off the weight.

I have never heard of Zyprexa being used for pain management. My brother has chronic back pain and his medication regime does include an antidepressant, though he does not exhibit classic signs of depression.

Has her doctor ever tried her on an AD before? I would try to go that route before I'd take something as heavy-duty as Zyprexa. I imagine it's a lot to take if you're not manic or psychotic.

Best of luck to your friend...

Girl

Thanks Girl:

Thank you so much for responding to my post. It seemed out of the blue that the doctor came up with Zyprexa and she asked me because she knows that I have been on, it seems like every med in the world for depression. I told her that I am not dealing with being manic or psychotic, but I often read on the pyscho boards about all different kinds of meds for my information. It really annoys me that her doctor would all of a sudden decide she was going to become an addict, when she has never taken more than presribed amount of the Tylenol 4, and sometimes none if she felt she could do without it, may 2 at the most 3 a day. But when she told me he prescribed Zyprexa I told her I have never heard about it on this site being indicated for pain management. For sure I have heard that most people have weight gain, something that would be quite serious for her. In fact, when you go out on the net, it is first indicated for psychophrenia (sp). I told her I would check it out and that she should seriously question her doctor. I really don't think he has any idea what he is talking about.

Like your brother, I told her I have heard of other antidepressants indicated to help pain, one being amitripytline, and I am sure many others.

I deal with chronic pain, and I take opiates, too many and certainly am addicted, although I don't like that word. I also take Nardil, which my psychiatrist is having a fit about, but without the lift of the depression from the opiates, I do not know how I would live. I would rather get rid of the depression than the pain in a minute.

Girl, I really appreciate you responding to my post, as I really didn't think anyone would. It helps me with information for her and I appreciate you taking the time, very much.

Thank you,

maryhelen
