Digestive problems with Depression ??

Posted by Nemo2 on March 10, 2004, at 15:25:38

Have any of you guys had a history of IBS or Gastritis or Dyspepsia associated with your Depression? I've discovered with Lexapro treatments that my chronic history of these problems over the last 25 years is being helped a lot by pulling out of the anxiety tailspin and D that has gotten much worse over the last two years. I'm 61 days into 10mg of Lex and the GI symptoms are gradually improving with the new outlook on life that Lex is giving me. Any thoughts from you on this?

I wish I could give you more info than I know, but I am pretty sure digestion and depression can be linked in some cases.

I go to a regular pysch/MD who also practices alternative meds in some cases. She put me on digestive enzymes because my digestion is a little off. The first two things she askes me about when I go to see her are how do you feel and how is your digestion and bowel movements. so apparently she and others believe there is a link.

I have also read that 1/2 of the serotonin your body produces is produced in your gut. A lot of people at curezone.com stress doing liver cleanes, intestinal, bowel and kidney cleanses to try to treat depression. I have never tried any though

I've been told in the past that I have IBS and have always had lots of digestive problems. I have taken several SSRI's and have always noticed that they help with the IBS. It is generally a gradual improvement, but the decrease in anxiety seems to be closely tied to the decrease in IBS symptoms.
