Info on Abilify?

Posted by andie7 on March 23, 2004, at 23:03:54

I would love to hear from anyone with any info on Abilify. I'm 31, recently dx with bipolar disorder. I have been on Zoloft 200mg for 5 years (which caused my first major manic episode) and more recently on Trileptal 600mg. I haven't been tolerating the Trileptal very well, its causing major headaches and some slight tremors as well as marked drowsiness (it knocks me out!). I have little to no depression, and no psychotic episodes with my mania.

Another concern I have is pregnancy, as I'd like to conceive again soon and worry about possible effects on the fetus. My pdoc has recommended I try an atypical and written me an rx for Abilify which I will start tomorrow. She says it has fewer side effects (which so did Trileptal) and can be taken safely during pregnancy (which I have yet to read anywhere).

I'd love to hear from any of you who know more about this drug or can make any recommendations on others I should look into.

Thanks,
Andie

Abilify kicked me into mania . i was so edgy and didn't sleep . was the wrong med for me . good thing I was on a low dose the aggitation was bad.
I hope it works for you. I'm just getting over it it took about a week to get out of my system.

Abilify gets some glowing reviews. Someone I know inspired me to try it, but my doc preferred to put me on Geodon for reasons unclear. So far I'm not noticing much of a change on Geo, but that too might be an option for you if you find Abilify makes you anxious or kicks you into mania. Its also one of the newer antipsychotics which are not supposed to make you sleepy and fat.

Anxiety on abilify was bad. I doubt they will give Geodon when pregnant, because of posible side effects. So I will recomend Zyprexa. It seems to be the safer one.

once i got passed the side effects, low dose abilify was a wonder drug for me... NOT for depression, but for mood stability (just like zyprexa but without sedating/making you want to sit down all the time and do nothing) .... it made me really motivated .... i always wanted to do something, keep busy.. it was great!!! ... i was taking 3.75 mg abilify instead of 5 mg zyprexa ..... now i've recently halved my abilify dose, and want to see if i can stay somewhat stable. (i wanted to be a little less stable, as all my friends are really funny and creative and i was rather boring at the higher dose of mood stabilizers in general)

no side effects i can think of .... a little insomnia? but when i added parnate, the insomnia went away (also with time it gets a lot better) .... yeah i would definately START LOW GO SLOW
