Please help with Wellbutrin and Klonopin problem!!

Posted by silmarilone on April 1, 2004, at 19:27:18

I take 150mg wellbutrin sr am and early afternoon. I take .5mg klonopin twice a day.

I feel good in the morning, energetic and get a lot done, then later I get really depressed and suicidal, and I dunno if it's the wellbutrin or the klonopin, --i've been on wellbutrin 2 weeks, will it take longer to start helping with the depression, as opposed to just giving me the side effects of speediness in the morning? Or is the klonopin making me more depressed--although it does help with the anxiety caUSED BY THE wellbutrin...I'm so confused! no pdoc apt for 3 weeks

Funny that you posted this. I take them both also. I have been trying to reduce my klonopin dose, but for the most part have taken about 1 mg at night and .75mg at noon. I takr WB sr morning and noon 150mg. I find that I do best in the morning as well. It is a very speedy feeling especially if I've had any coffee.

When I take my afternoon doses it's like the klonopin negates the stimulant effects of the WB. It's a tough deal for me because I take the K for derealization and things get real bad if I don't take that afternoon dose. The K has some kind of AD effect for me also. Anyhow, I am tired and maybe a little depressed for a few hours after, but it gets better.

I don't know if their is really any "true" AD effect of WB or if it just gives you energy which translates into something similar to not being depressed. It definitely helps me, but yes, this is a funky combo. I think there may be some antagonism between the two during that afternnon dose. Hang in there!

Ask MD about taking inderal instead of klonopin with wellbutrin. It works for me. terrics

I was told that the SR should be taken 8 hours apart by the pdoc. I would not approach them like a stimulant, but that is my opinion.

I think I read a post by you elsewhere, and I am happy that you are back.

My opinion is that benzos are great for sedating and anxiety, but if you are depressed, they just bring you lower. It is tough I guess if you are having a mixed mood or have anxiety with depression. Benzos fog you. It's just what you have to put up with because they are not more specific in their action than like ambien is as a hypnotic/sedative.

The side effects should subside of SR should subside, but sounds to me you are where you should be unless the SR is unbearably agitating which does happen.

Ask for wellbutrin 300 XL if possible. That way you won't have to worry about peaks and valleys.

The main effect is not supposed to be the speedy feeling. That will go away.

Wellbutrin is a true blue antidepressant in the sense that its efficacy is exactly the same as the SSRIs. Just because it has an amphetmine like effect in the beginning, and it does not affect serotonin does not mean it is an indirect antidepressant. All three mainly addressed neurotransmitters: dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin are implicated in depression. Who needs which neurotransmitter or transmitters tweaked is a trial and error game. Not all depressions are the same as far as their symptoms, so some may benefit from a wellbutrin while others may be more successful with Remeron which is not stimulating.

Zoloft/wellbutrin combo may be helpful. Zoloft is prescribed for anxiety.

Hi Simarilone,

You might want to try reducing your Klonopin dose. If it is the Klonopin that's making you more depressed, then your mood will improve when you lower your dose. If things don't get better, you will know it isn't the Klonopin that is causing the problem.

I wonder if it would help to take your Wellbutrin doses further apart? You could call your pdoc and see what he/she thinks about that.

Wellbutrin does take about 4 weeks to kick in. Give it another two weeks and if you're not feeling better by then I'd suggest trying a different med. Prozac is a wonderful antidepressant and I had wonderful results with it.

Best of luck to you!

K.

Hi again, I am on wellbutrin and klonopin also, but MD put me on inderal to stop tremors from lithium. I am also on effexor xr. I was taking wellbutrin and klonopin and inderal in the AM when I realized I did not need the A.M. klonopin if I took the inderal. It has been known for a long time that inderal [a blood pressure medication] works for anxiety. Do you take long acting wellbutrin? I do and only take it once a day. good luck in your search. terrics
