When I first started taking Effexor XR three years ago, I was amazed at how quickly I felt better. Within a week's time, I was back to feeling like myself again. BUT, having said that, don't stay on Effexor long and for heaven's sake, don't let your dr keep adjusting your dose up. It's great for a while, but eventually you have to come off it and then hell arrives at your doorstep. Tread carefully. It's supposedly not addictive or habit forming, but DO NOT miss a dose. If you do, you will understand why.

I have been on Efexor XR 75mg for about three weeks. I started at this dosage (first day was hell!) and will increase to 150mg at the end of this month. I was told that I would only really see it working after about 6 weeks. I am happy to say that I do feel much better, certainly more in control. I still get quite down but seem to cope with it. My husband says there is a noticable difference and my son says his mommy doesn't cry so much anymore!

Sending you lots of encouragement.

Sabrina

Hi There!

I also started my Effexor at 37.5 and gradually increased my way up to 150 mg. Personally, I didn't really see results until I had been at the 150 level for several weeks.

However, as my doc says, I tend to be "cast iron" when it comes to medicines. I eventually went up to 300 mg but had to reduce back down to 150 when Wellbutrin was added. (My pdoc didn't explain it to me other than telling me I could suffer from serotonin syndrome due to the combination...King Vultran (Lar) explained to me on this site that the Wellbutrin will potentiate the Effexor in the blood stream due to some type of conflict in the enzymatic pathways of the drugs.) This is all just to say that I did notice some withdrawal symptoms when I cut from 300 to 150. It wasn't pleasant but I was still able to work and function.

Good luck with the Effexor. I really hope it works well for you!

I've been at 37.5 for three weeks now and have noticed a difference. I'm calmer and not as depressed or irritable. Effexor XR is better than the regular Effexor, which made me feel high and numb. The XR is more stable.

Always keep a few backup doses with you in case you are somewhere and realized you forgot your morning dose. My biggest fear was being trapped somewhere and I wouldn't be able to take my next dose on time.

I still have this fear!
I was travelling abroad and the mail delayed too much to deliver the Effexor I asked my parents to send me. I was on 150mg a day and had to wait for about a week to have it again. I felt so bad!!
Good luck!

Kelly, don't be scared

Don't be scared Kelly. I too was very scared to try Effexor when I heard about all the side effects. I had a bad experience with Paxil previously which heightened my fears. But then I tried Effexor XR, and I have had very minimal side effects, and I feel better than before I was on it. Make sure you are taking the Effexor XR capsule. I only had problems with the Effexor tablet, which I had to break in half every for each dose. But then I switched to the XR, which is the capsule, and I've had no problems. It is timed released, so the medication is slowly released into your body, so you won't feel overwhelmed. The only side effects I had were a slight shaking jaw and yawning, but it passed after a few days. I feel much better now. If you are too scared to try something, you will never know how it reacts to your body and which med is right for you, and a successful treatment will be difficult to find. Be brave-you can do it. Not everyone has had a bad experience with Effexor XR. Many many people have had success and are living better lives now. Don't give in to fear.
