Tried 7 meds for OCD, nothing works, please help!!

Posted by Eric B on November 15, 2005, at 15:17:13

I have severe OCD. Iīve tried 7 meds so far with no/little/temporary effect. I have been reported sick for 2 years, and I would desperately like to return to my studying. I hope my post is not too long to discourage you from reading it and I hope someone will be able to help me.

At first I got Prozac. Didnīt help. Then I tried Celexa. Didnīt help. Then I tried Lexapro. Didnīt help either.

Then I tried tramadol (Ultram). It worked really good at first but after some time the effect disappeared and the OCD actually got worse than it was before I took tramadol.

Then I tried clomipramine (Anafranil)helped me somewhat at 150 mg but because of sexual dysfunction, I had to lower it to 100 where it just helps me a little bit and not enough to return to school.

Then we tried to add risperidal to augment the effect of clomipramine. Nothing happened and the sexual dysfunction was total.

So after some research Iīve come to the conclusion that I can still try SSRI+Risperdal or SSRI+Clomipramine+Risperdal but since all of them gives me sexual dysfunction (adding Buspar doesnīt help either) I doubt any of this will be an option.

So my final attempt will be to take clomipramine with mirtazepine or mirtazepine alone to avoid the sexual dysfunction. If it wont work or if there will be too much side effects really donīt know what else to to do.

I would like to thank you for reading my post and if anyone have some idea what else I can try I would VERY much appriciate if you helped me.

Forgot to mention about the last medicine

Forgot to mention I have also tried augmenting the SSRIs with zyprexa and augmenting clomipramine with zyprexa instead of risperdal.
It didnīt have any effect.

You haven't tried the benzodiazepines (klonopin perhaps, xanax, valium) yet or mood stabilizers. I know they aren't usually thought of for OCD, but they can work real good on those symptoms. Depakote is highly recommended by my pdoc for bipolar and for OCD.

Since you've already squeezed everything you can out of the ssris and the antipsychotics, I think it makes sense to look at a totally different class of meds. Benzos or depakote maybe.

Hi.

I just wandered how long you wait before changing meds? Sexual dysfunction can (sometimes, not always) fade with time. Nardil is a classic example where it can take over 6 months to get to managable 'capabilities'. It just depends on whether you take that chance and can be that patient.

I've had/have the same problem but to me a theraputic response to my meds far outweighs the (hopefully) temporary lack of orgasm.

There are always antidotes you could try. These boards are full of them. For starters there's Viagra, Yohimbine, Cyproheptadine, Amantadine, Bethanechol. And try searching the net using, say "SSRI +anorgasmia +antidote" or similar. Here's a good link from this very site:

Good luck with it all.
