I am at a loss to find treatments for atypical facial pain. Every doctor I see has different ideas about what works, and I simply want my life back... any ideas?

Can you tell us what meds you are on? Any ADs? Any atypicals? Both Lamictal and Risperdal gave me facial (mostly dental) pain.We could help more if we knew more about your situation.

Atypical facial pain is often treated with TCAs such as nortriptyline. Have you tried it?

> EdSo far I have tried tegretol and baclofen, but they apparently are more for trigeminal neuralgia. 10 days ago I started neurontin, but that ended last night in urgent care because it essentially was making me feel cracked out. Elavil, is that the drug being refrenced? If so, no, not yet. I'm so tired of the "God-like Specialists". They each have a different plan, and none take the time to explain the ramifications of the drugs they prescribe.
I'm also on Paxil 25 mg for depression/ anxiety, and xanax for panic attacks. Long-time problem.
I have bilateral burning/ aching in cheeks/ cheek bones. When pain reaches 6-7, my teeth throb as well. Pain is almost always present, and gets worse throughout the day. Had sinus surgery last year, no help. The bilateral thing really confuses the specialists...

Hi
Amitriptyline (Elavil) is one the standard choices for atypical facial pain. Nortriptyline (Pamelor) is also used and tends to cause less marked side effects than amitriptyline.
Paroxetine (Paxil) alters the metabolism of tricylics such as amitriptyline and nortriptyline. The dose of the tricyclic must be reduced substantially to avoid side effects.
