Hi Everyone,
I started taking Nardil about 5 weeks ago. I have had pretty a quite dramatic lowering of my anxiety; however, I have started to feel more depressed the last two weeks. Has anyone else had this experience with a MAOI? Is it possible to take Nardil and an atypical antipsycotic, such as Abilify?

Instead of an atypical right off, you might want to try a different augmentation strategy. You can safely take Tricylcics w/ MAOIs, so thats one option. Stimulants are also an option; low-dose Ritalin, Dexedrine, or Provigil might be helpful in your case. Benzos are also an option.

I wouldn't be too eager to start adding other meds, you've only been on Nardil for 5 wks. thats not very long. Talk to your doc, I would consider raising the Nardil dose before doing anything else. Good luck.

Perhaps you would do better on Parnate? A few people find that their depression worsens on Nardil, despite the reduction in anxiety. Such people often seem to do well on Parnate. Just an observation.

You say you had a huge lowering of your anxiety? It sounds to me like you might just need a med increase to take care of the depression. What 'might' be happening is that you at understandably down because it hasn't gotten to your depression yet which, of course increases your depression. You didn't say how much Nardil you are taking? You know it's there and it's working; you might just need another week or so to have the full effect kick in. Nardil is also a bit tiring which you might be confusing (and rightly so) with depression. When all you want to do is sleep all day you think you are depressed when you might just be suffering through the temporary side effect of Nardil tiredness. You at least know now that MAOI's work for you so there is always Parnate which works faster and is more activating.
Oh and I checked and the washout between Nardil to Parnate is about 2 weeks on average.
This is all my opinion, ymmv :-)
