Thanks, John.
Does anyone know if GVG is available in any form presently? It looks like a patent application for utilization of an existing med in a new way, but I'm not sure I got the drift of what's currently available or not.
This might be great news if it pans out. I just spent more than an hour this morning writing out all my OCD symptoms for the new psydoc I'm waiting to see. It's an impressive list.

Hi Greywolf,
my ocd symptom list is impressive also, it has "morphed" over the years, but still very bothersome, i have what some might term pure "O", Although i had handwashing and other rituals in the past.
"Campral is a delayed release tablet, which i take, and has similiar mechanisms to GVG, i have seen other articles stating Campral, with it's effect on taurine and gaba, may help ocd, and it is fairly inexpensive, [85.00, u.s., for 180 tabs.] i have been taking prozac for my ocd, i'm trying to wean at the moment, [trying being the definitive word, lol] i'm a bit anxiuos about withdrawal, the ssri's do help quite a bit with ocd.good luck on your p-doc appointment, i also hear alot of talk on ocdsupportgroups about "Riluzole", take care...john

Hi Phillipa, i beleive campral, GVG, gabatentin, topriramate and valproic acid are similiar in that they increase or enhance GABA transmission in the central nervous system, possibly leading to
some releif in ocd and ocd type behaviors.my therapist felt that my drinking had an ocd-like quality to it, thus he felt campral could be beneficial for both, although more so for alcoholism, that is all the FDA approves it for at this time, i also hear it is used off-label for
mood stabilization, although i can't confirm that. i hope you are having a great nite, your friend...john

both are cool, but i really like "crazy horse",
I am amazed the things we have in common, i have met quite a few people with ocd who also share alcohol problems, makes the situation more of a struggle at times, for sure.
I had a year of sobriety, then slipped 3 months ago, but i am back on track, dropping alcohol from the equation is the only way for me personally to make progress, i know you agree!!i promise to definetly stay in touch regularly, our struggles seem to parallel each others in many respects, i hope to have a wife and supportive family like you someday soon. let go, let god, i hope to make this work "one day at a time", thanks for being a friend to me, peace and goodnight....john

> Hi Tyler, i hope you don't mind me mentioning your name in my post, but i wanted you to check out this thread, i am taking "campral" for alcoholism and also to help with my ocd, i hope you get some good info from this site...johnSounds very promising..I just read the whole article, thanks for sending it to me John.
Currently, after many years of counciling and now taking Parnate, ocd (Thank God) has not been too much of a problem for me. How about you?
My ocd came in the form of unwanted "Bad" thoughts, and fear of acting out. Or, just being very afraid of thoughts that i thought were wrong or blasphemous against God. Of course i never have acted out any of these thoughts, people with ocd never do. I never had compulsions with mine, as in washing hands etc. But, they did interfere with daily living and would cause deep depression. Drinking for me either made them "go away" or see them for what they really are...useless, crap, which did not make me a bad person. Wow, my stomach gets butterflies just talking about it, but that's okay.
I read something that helped me many years ago..and still does: Temptation is not the same as sin in the thought life. Evil thoughts may pass through the mind, but sin comes from dwelling on it or truly wanting to act on it. As an illustration: "You can't stop birds from flying over your head, but you can stop them from building a nest in your hair."
What has been working for you John? And congratulations on not drinking...it took me A LONG TIME to finally stop, and as you know I'm only one drink away from going back. One day at a time is a good way to live life! Take care my friend.-Crazy Horse (Tyler)

Hi Crazy Horse,
it is really odd how drinking makes the ocd almost completly go away, isn't it?, i always found great relief from drinking, but of course the social/economical problems were too high a price to pay, to say the least.
now i use exercise [weights and running] and campral, which takes away my urge to drink somewhat. i know exactly what you mean Tyler, when i think back on some of my worst times with ocd i almost shudder, i never thoutht i would be able to face ocd drug and alcohol free, until it became a neccessity!!i have ruined so many great relationships, [i was engaged once] through just my drinking and related behavior.
but i also touch base with other alcoholics, [sometimes a.a. meetings] and i am a member of ocdsupportgroups@yahoo.com. [i recommend it highly] and through the grace of god, and an occasional klonopin, lol, i am back to doing well, prozac helped my ocd quite a bit, but cbt therapy i think is still best.if you ever would like to write, my email address is- { berkrock1@aol.com] take care, your friend...john
