Terrible headaches with Cymbalta...

Posted by TrishP on April 26, 2006, at 9:19:09

I just started taking 30 mg of Cymbalta every morning - for the past 6 days and I have had terrible headaches. I am a fast metabolizer of meds and so the half life with even 37.5 mg of Effexor got me bad if I missed it by a few hours.

I was hoping the half life of Cymbalta would be better.

Are my terrible headaches because of the half-life of Cymbalta? It makes me think that the discontinuation of this med would be just as bad as Effexor.

To test to see if it is a halflife thing, you could call your doctor on the phone and ask them to call in a script to your pharmacy for 20mg instead of 30mg, and then take 20mg twice day.

Or you could do it the cumbersome way by dumping the contents of a 30mg capsule onto a plate, roughing dividing the beads into two relatively equal sized piles, and doing one pile twice a day. Or even three fairly equal sized piles for three times a day dosing. Even if you did it just for 2 or 3 days, it would give you a good idea if it is a halflife thing or not.

Hi there. I had terrible headaches starting up on Cymbalta, and at each increase in dosage. Most medications give me headaches when I first start them, come to think of it.

I don't know if it's due to half-life or not. I'm pretty vigilant about taking my medications at the same time every day.

But the Cymbalta headaches, which were not even TOUCHED by any OTC treatment, subsided on their own after several weeks. I kind of stumbled around alternating hot and cold compresses, and they were the only relief I had. Hang in there if you're able to. Don't think about the possible discontinuation problems until you get to that point, OK? I think I'll be on Cymbalta for a long time.

I quit taking Cymbalta cold turkey and had no problems.
