I have taken trileptal l50mg at night my old pdoc said to help with sleep. How and what dose would you compare it with? And do that act the same? Am or Pm on the lamictal. Thanks's as I had no sided effects on trileptal. It was just too expensive so I stopped. Hummmm so did my lack of depression. A light bulb just went on. Love Phillipa

Hi Jan.
150mg of Trileptal is a very low dosage. It probably compares to 50mg of Lamictal. That is a guesstimate based upon my experiences with the two drugs.
I found that 600mg of Trileptal had a mild antidepressant effect. The only side-effect I experienced was excematous dry patches on my hands.

The therapeutic range for Trileptal is usually 600mg (usually 900mg)-1200mg, and it can be as high as 2400mg for epilepsy.
I have been between 600-1200mg while at target dose, but you titrate slow.
So, I think at 150mg you are just getting the sleepiness side effect which should go away in a week. Unless your enzyme system is different or there are unknown racial differences for metabolism in Trileptal and, you are a minority, a low dose of Trileptal would seem subtherapeutic.
Does Novartis have a medical assistance program?
You could always try Tegretol, Trileptal's original cousin. I don't know how much equepro costs which is sustained-release Tegretol. Tegretol is much less expensive except the side effect profile is more risky than Trileptal.
I am just starting Lamictal, and it doesn't push me down into dizziness and fuzzy brain as much yet.
I would say 25mg of Lamictal might be like 300mg of Trileptal or less even.
I think they are like apples and oranges as Trileptal is a mild antimanic more than an antidepressant with mood-enhancing qualities.

Hey P,
I think lamictal is much more activating, much more effective for 'depressive' symptoms.. trileptal is touted as a cleaner version of tegretol which is more of a classic mood stabilizer... i would think trileptal is more effective for forms of mania whereas lamictal is more effective for feeeling sad and down... 150mg of trileptal is an infantile dose and u shouldnt fear it thats for sure... just as was written by another on this thread, the therapeutic range seems to be 900 and up...
I'm currently on trileptal in combo with other drugs and it seems to be treating me well... no major side effects.. one bonus of trileptal is that no blood drawings are necessary!bps

Hey P,
You mean lamictal? Yeah, i think the general consensus is eitehr to take it all in the morning or the split the dose into two, am and pm...

That is true about blood drawings, but you may want to have your sodium checked because that is about the prime danger point and adverse side effect is having it too low. I used to have mine done by pdoc orders, so keep that in mind if you want to be extra careful.
