Does Topamax work for uni / bi depression? Anyone?

Posted by SLS on July 16, 2006, at 9:37:36

Hi.

I have a form of bipolar disorder that presents as a chronic severe depression. I have been taking Topamax 100mg for about a week. So far, I think it is helping with mental energy and focus - barely. That's about it. I'll take what I can get, though.

Has anyone had success treating depression or the depressive phase of bipolar disorder with Topamax? What dosage? How long did it take to see results?

Thanks.

Currently:

nortriptyline 100mg
Lamictal 150mg
Topamax 100mg
Abilify 10mg

Scott...

Following on from answering my Topamax post above..
This was the only mood stabilising drug that didn't take me into a state of depression , I didn't need to nap and felt more myself. It levelled my mood without feeling too flat and disinterested in things.
The theraputic dose is supposed to be 100mg but I was ok at 75 but the side effects were too much.
I had no concentration problems or stupids just spelling problems. I saw the benefits after about four weeks.
If your side effects aren't disabling it may be great for your depression..I hope it will be.

Lamictal helps me (about a 15% improvement) only when I take it with an antidepressant. I found that 150mg is almost as good as 300mg for depression, but much better with regard to cognitive side effects. 300mg produced significant memory impairments and cognitive blunting. Some people can take 500mg of Lamictal without any such side effects.
