Hi, I am in need of help! My son is 12 years old. We have tried Ritalin and Strattera nothing works. He can't go outside alone. He gets in trouble anywhere there are other kids. I have heard about Respirital like any drug I have heard good things and bad things. I do not want to hurt my son with the side effects of this drug, but at this point he is going to be in jail before he is in highschool. I do not know what to do or where to go. Nobody has any answers or help. I am cared for my son's future. Please help!

Risperdal is a powerful anti-psychotic drug that might be expected to have some tranquilizing and calming effects. I've tried it and found it rather zombifying, but I would expect a person who is psychotic or perhaps has violent tendencies to have a greater ability to tolerate it. Risperdal can cause significant EPSEs (extrapyramidal side effects) at higher dosages, so it is wise to not dose it at levels that are much higher than what is actually needed. It is widely used for schizophrenia and has some other utility as well.Todd

I wrote my post before I saw your post. I have no advice for you, but know you are not alone.

I can so relate to what you are going through. Risperdal can help...my son was in that boat too. Have you tried Focalin? That has worked for my son. He was on Risperdal, Geodon and Zyprexa at different times to try to keep him out of deep you know what. Eventually he will start to mature and that does help but I don't know how to help you stop worrying. Mine is 18 and I still haven't. Hang in there. At 12, he's old enough to tell you if there are imminent, dangerous side effects for him and you will be able to gauge also by observing him. Meds aren't an answer but when you are that worried about keeping him safe and not ruining his life, it is worth a shot. Take it from a mom who's been there.

You could try omega-3 fatty acids as an adjunctive. They can ease agression.
A low dose of lithium (~300mg) might help with fewer side effects too.
Avoid antipsychotics if at all possable.
They can cause movement disorders, a developing child's brain may be more susceptable to these types of problems.
