Lexapro has done a great job at lifting my depression, and lifted my 5 year chronic derealization.
That said, i still have racing thoughts/ruminations, and the inability to sit still, and even sleep.
I can take celexa, and i can sit still fine at work, and be able to sleep fine. But depression will still be there, and derealization will be bad.
So the choice is between an antipsychotic, or a mood stablizer. Lamictal ramps me up, so that's a no go.
I think that it boils down to Depakote ER or Risperdol.
What are your experiences? Advice, thanks.

Why not a benzo or seroquel? How come you narrowed it down so far? Love Phillipa

I have a benzo, but i can not take enough to slow things down. My doc prefers risperdal to seroquel, as do i, but I'm not big on meds that act on histamine, bothers me the whole next day.
i have taken topamax (made me dumb), lamictal (headaches and insomnia), neurontin does nothing, and trileptal helped depression and benzo withdrawal, but cause horrible headaches and hunger.
I have taken depakote monotherapy for migraines 2-3 years ago. I was on no other meds at the time. I had no other problems other than derealization at the time, but depakote had no side effects for me, except a little hunger.

Advice, thanks.I wonder about your experiences, lexapro is a subcomponent of celexa so one might expect that the experience of both would be similar, perhaps when you have been taking celexa you havent been taking a high enough dose to realize the same effect as lexapro. Following that line of thought it might then appear that your symptom of not being able to sit still and sleep is a side effect of your lexapro dose. To me this could imply that perhaps a different antidepressant might work better and be a better treatment than adding other medication.

WEll w/ celexa, i can sit still and sleep just fine. Only that i will want to sit in the house, and not go anywhere. I went up to 60mgs, but could not tolerate.
Derealization has crippled my life the past 5 years, and i do not want to give up on lexapro that has finally lifted it.
The 2 medications are very similar, but act as 2 completely different meds in me.
This is why my doctor has considered combining the 2, and getting the good effects from both.Brian
