Help; Is Parnate safe to take with Adderall?

Posted by JR Boudreaux on April 27, 2007, at 6:41:20

My meds are currently Klonopin 8mg/day,I just went through the washout period w/ Celexa of 14 days, I take adderall 60mg/dAY for ADHD and social phobia. I'm hoping to get my p-doc to change me to parnate because after every SSRI and several tricyclics, and remeron(doesn't count really) I still suffer from depression that is severe most days. my social phobia is currently in remission.

On a seperate note, I need a sleeping aid that is generic (no insurance) and was thinking of flurazepam (Dalmane) or triazolam (Halcion). If anyone has experience on how these have worked please let me know.

I live in the US by the way.

I appreciate any input and thaks in advance. I'm new here, though I know a greeat deal about pstychopharmacology and medicine having a degree in biochemistry. Thanks again!

Not officially safe, my pdoc won't do it, others here have done it without problems, but not recommended to do and most pdocs will not ssanction the combination due to warnings between stimulants and MAOI's.

So the answer is really no unless you find a pdoc that will do it or you risk a reaction doing it on your own. Alot has to do with dosages and no one is really adhering to the seriousness of SE's like hypertension or NMS or TD. My father went into NMS in the ER at Yale (he was given Haldol when on Sinemet for parkinson's, big NO-NO) and the docs there didn't pick up on it, I did probably warding off a fatal outcome. Docs miss the symptoms all the time so the risk is very real between MAOs and other drugs especially stims. Not worth it if you ask me.

Be careful doing this,i personaly think it should be done in SEVERE cases and only a short time to get a person past a hurdle and then removed.

Aside from the deadly affects of the combo on the body,it also quickly ,so quickly you might even miss it,cause a person to become so manaic that they will have no place to go but a pysch ward.

Trust me on this,i had a doc willing to do so not understanding the severity,i knew but shut up cause i thought YAY i snuck one by,well i got out of it a few days of relieaf, followed by my only psychotic episode ever where i thought i was being shot at.Scary stuff.

Despite the warnings from the other posters, which, of course, you should take seriously, my pdoc has not been unwilling to prescribe adderall with Parnate.

It really is a matter of individual reactions, which your pdoc may have some read on. Another issue is how strong a relationship you have with her/him. eg if you tend to be aware of and report adverse effects early.

Another factor, of course, is whether your pdoc is experienced with Maois. If not, if not, he/she would be understandably much less likely to prescribe anything not in line with standard recommendations. My pdoc has used Maois extensively for many years.

I'm not sure if your pdoc would want to start you on Parnate with adderall, as opposed to adding the adderall after seeing how you respond to parnate, though.

So it's hard to know if that would be a combination that you could use.

Hey: I just started Parnate 4 days ago and was previously on Desoxyn for ADD/perpetual drowsiness. My doc specifically told me to get off the Desoxyn for two weeks before I started the Parnate. He's wasn't comfortable with me being on a stimulant and Parnate at the same time. I trust his judgement, so I would say no, that it's not safe to be on Adderall and Parnate at the same time.

60mg/d is quite a lot.

I'd guess that the amount of amphetamine you could take without developing high BP would be really low.
