weightlifting on MAOIs?

Posted by vaxerdec on November 6, 2007, at 3:02:12

I noticed a discussion thread from about a year ago about using Protein Powder supplements along with MAOIs.

I am taking 90mg/day Nardil and would like to begin a weightlifting regimen along with a Whey Protein supplement. I have read all the messages in the thread about Whey Protein and there does not seem to be any conclusive result or consensus reached regarding the dangers of taking whey protein supplements with MAOIs. Since the postings, has anyone been using the MAOIs in combination with a particular protein powder, with any negative consequences resulting? I tried to mail the original poster, H. Upmann, but was not
successful (the system claimed he was "not a poster"). It may be that some pure protein supplements are manufactured in such a way as to have little or no tyramine content, and may be safe. In this case I would need to know from someone with empirical knowledge of success and the exact brand used.

I am also wondering if there has been any issues with blood pressure while using heavy weights in power lifts. I know that intense high-load lifts can cause very high spikes in blood pressure, and MAOIs seem to mess with this a lot. I'd be worried about passing out from low blood pressure during a power lift, or having a stroke from high blood pressure.

Does anyone have any more information to share? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am not 100% sure but how Nardil would react
but I take it with Parnate and it works great. It has replaced old style supplements because your
body just about uses almost all of it.I have
looked at old style protien supplements,And
most of them have have added Tyramine as
a ingrediant.One more thing a great person

I took the MAOI Parnate for six months and there is no way I would ever take any protein supplement with traditional MAOIs such as Nardil, Parnate and Marplan. Protein powders...there is no way to really predict whats in them.

As far as weight training, thats probably a question for your doctor that prescribed the MAOI and also maybe for your GP doctor. I never heard of any reason not to exercise vigorously on MAOIs.

I cleared over an acre of land behind my house with a chainsaw and an axe the summer and fall I was on the MAOI Parnate. I was chopping down a lot of trees, dragging logs around with my bare hands...no machinery all done by hand and chainsaw/axe. I had a lot of energy on that stuff and the heavy land clearing was essentially a "thrash" type workout that would leave me feeling totally exhausted and sometimes even debilitated at the end of the day. But it felt good.

I say, go for it.
