Take coQ10 With Your TCA and Up Your Salt

Posted by bulldog2 on May 11, 2008, at 15:10:43

I read an abstract that TCAs deplete your body of coQ10 which is necessary for heart health and other body functions. They also deplete your body of salt. So supplement your body with coQ10 a couple times a day to protect your heart. You may also wish to add some to your food.

CoQ10...anyone taking?

Anyone taking CoQ10 for depression? Just wondering if it's effective at all...ran across a clinical trial of it for depression on clicnicaltrials.gov and got curious.

Does anyone know the theoretical basis for why it should be helpful in MDD or Bipolar depression? And dosages?

I'm taking it and it helps boost energy. It also clears thought and definitely does something to improve sensation of overall body health, like vitamin C and E etc

I take it but just as a supplement - it is supposed to reduce homocysteine. It is considered a supplement that is beneficial for the heart by reducing homocysteine levels. However, the research is somewhat spotty on this. Also recall reading something about CoQ10 causing increased production of free radicals in cases of oxygen depletion. Depletion may not be the right term here and this was discussed with regard to another substance Idebenone which is a synthetic variant of CoQ10 that presumably doesn't have this effect. I also read that for now the consensus seems to be to stick with CoQ10. Since I respond better to the TCAs I've added it to my regimen of supplements and have been taking for many years. I can't say that I have noticed any effect in terms of depression. I take 100mg/ day. I am not sure what an appropriate dosage should be.
