Hi everyone
My psychiatrist gave me a prescription for Haloperidol today - 1mg per day, for severe anxiety.
My question is can I expect to get the movement disorders and/or restlessness commonly associated with these type of drugs??
I am only on 1mg per day (500mcgs twice a day) so will the movment disorders and restlessness manifest themselves, or am I 'safe' with such a small dose??
Thanks!

That doesn't mean you're in the 25% category, as you said you're taking a low dose. What is most important is the MED, the minimum effective dose, although I'm curious why he didnt give a prescription for Risperdal at that low dose, but I'm not going to second guess your doctor.Yes, movement symptoms can affect anyone -- which is why people are migrating to using atypicals -- and then there's the whole CATIE argument (a bit long for here, you would have to look it up -- basically saying that there isn't a difference in effectiveness, true --- but side effects of atypicals are more humane in my opinion for a lot of patients).
In the short run if you haven't taken a lot of antipsychotics, Haldol at that range -- I'm not a soothsayer, I wish I had one for all my symptoms :(, shouldn't be a long term problem but you may experience EPS (side effects -- yes, the restlessness, akathisia) after a while which can be addressed with other medications. It will probably make you very sleepy at first.
hope that helps

from what I hear is Haldol is the worst AP for movement disorders. I've never taken it to my knowledge, and have no personal experience to share. I do take anouther typical AP, perphenazine, which seems to work well, with little movement disorder. One drug you could take is cogentin, very cheap and effective, I take it with perphenazine.
I don't want to scare you off of haldol. If you have been taking it already and not much problems right away it probably won't be much of a problem!
This is the end of the thread.
