Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome psychiatric probs

Posted by LostBoyinNCBecksDark on November 18, 2008, at 1:13:37

My sleep doctor told me I probably had something called "Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome" going as far back as my late twenties, around the time when my mental problems developed. I now have full blown obstructive sleep apnea and use CPAP religiously.

I found out that UARS is like super mild sleep apnea, and oftentimes presents itself as more like psychiatric symptoms rather than classic sleep apnea excessive daytime sleepiness.

UARS is treated with CPAP and can only be diagnosed formally in a sleep study, using specialized equipment not normally used in sleep studies. Most doctors are unaware of UARS and its psychiatric-like presentation.

Might be something to check out if you are 1) treatment resistant; 2) snore heavily; 3) are overweight; 4) have upper respiratory problems such as sinus issues, enlarged tonsils, etc.

Read about it on Medscape:

"Not infrequently, UARS is misinterpreted as chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, or psychiatric disorders, such as attention deficit disorder/attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.[31"

Are you an RN also as I also subscribe to same newsletter and need my license number to get the info. Seems like sleep studies are being used more to dianose psychiatric problems. Will check my newsletter and see if I have the study also. thanks Phillipa

No, not an RN or any other medical person. I was just told I have UARS and that it preceded my OSA and I did a google search on UARS and came up with that Medscape article. Figured Id warn others about UARS and its relationship to poor sleep and psychiatric issues.

I have been periodically reading Medscape articles for years...I never was told you had to be a medical professional to use it. Its for anybody. With the way the medical profession is these days and with managed care health insurance, you have to do about half the work yourself anyway, so WTF?
