Strange Benzo Question

Posted by Phillipa on August 2, 2009, at 0:50:39

Sounds unbelieveable but been on prescribed benzos wow for 40 years now always at low doses. Lately seems that the benzos just make me tired when they used to give me energy. Energy as they relieved anxiety. Now just tired. Can one just keep going down in dose after so many years? I've been gradually cutting down. Now down to .25 xanax a day and 7.5mg of valium. Still experience anxiety but in a different way it seems to manifest in kind of I am frozen. Thanks Phillipa

Hey that's great you are so low on them, practically off. I have been having a strange paradoxical effect with klonopin. I wake up at five feeling fine, take a klonopin to get me back to sleep until 8:30 and wake up anxious. Could this be the klonopin?

Do you feel tired all the time or only after you take them? Do you feel better or worse on the smaller doses now?

Anxiety makes me feel frozen too - like I have no energy or am somehow afraid to do things. It's like my mind is closed up and even simple things require a big effort. I think this is a symptom of psychomotor retardation.

If you managed to cut down then sure keep going. Although I wouldn't torture myself just to prove a point - if the smaller doses are impacting your quality of life you might just have to stick with a dose you feel comfortable with.

To Zana and Hyperfocus. First Zana used to be the benzos were so dependable. Sure anyone can have a paradoxical effect to a med benzos included. Hyperfocus it's so wierd the less I take the more I sleep but they don't work for anxiety anymore so I'm trapped not knowing what to do. And then I get angry and act out. I want out of the house all the time afraid to be by myself it's horrible. Just don't know what to do. Love Phillipa

Phillipa,
I think it is great that you have been tapering your benzos. I'm sure you know about the Ashton manual - British doctor that has a course of gradual withdrawal from the benzos. Basically she does a substitution to valium and then starts tapering the valium. It can be a bit more complicated, but the different procedure's are explained very well for the different drugs.

One of the problems with benzos is that you require more to achieve the same effect over time, but you are experiencing more fatigue and more anxiety at the lower dosages. The fatigue part is confusing. I wish I had an explanation, but try to hang in there you only have maybe less than a month to go before your next appointment.

This is not true for everyone. I have been steady state on Xanax for years now. Please phrase your missives properly and don't misconstrue the facts. Everyone is an individual and what works for one may not work for another. Thanks.

No one can explain the fatique on lower doses? Could it be the addition of bioidentical hormone creasm or the wacky thyroid I have? Phillipa
