Anyone on Saphris?

Posted by greywolf on November 3, 2009, at 20:17:13

My psydoc just added Saphris 5mg x 2/day to my Parnate 60mg/day, Cytomel 50mcg, and Xanax 4mg/day. Additionally, I have a VNS stimulator.

Diagnosis is bipolar disorder and severe OCD. After a period of a couple months of a lighter mood at the end of summer, I have regressed into a long-term depression marked by severe and unremitting interfering thoughts.

While I am usually exhausted, I cannot sleep even with Lunesta or Ambien. My doctor added Zyprexa for mood control and because it was supposed to help with sleep, but it leaves me too foggy in the morning to function at work.

Now, we're trying Saphris. I was wondering if anyone has had experience with this med, particularly regarding any side effects.

Thanks.

Greywolf I'm sorry the VNS didn't work any better. So still trying different meds. I'll have to look this one up. Love Phillipa

I see it's a new atypical antipsychotic approved both for bipolar I and schizophrenia. I haven't heard a word on it on babble. Hope someone knows. Love Phillipa

Hi Phillipa

It's not that the VNS has not worked. In fact, I'm still in the process of working my way up to the maximum power setting (it gets adjusted only every 2 months or so). And the VNS is intended to be used in conjunction with meds (a good thing, too, given how much I was on when I was off work for 6 weeks last spring).

As I'm sure you may recall from my posts over the years, I've been suffering from bipolar and OCD for a couple decades now. July and August this past summer was the first period of time that I felt a significant lightening of my mood for any extended time. Of course, I had my bad days, but for the first time in my memory, there were more good days than bad.

Unfortunately, the good times passed, and I'm now back in the grip of BP and the OCD is out of control. My psychiatrist added Saphris partly for mood control on the manic side, and partly to see if it could assist with sleep without turning me into a zombie like the Zyprexa does.

So far, I am not sure of any effect of Saphris other than it's the most foul tasting stuff I've ever taken (it's a sublingual tablet that dissolves and is absorbed into your bloodstream through the mouth). Hopefully, it works, but it would have been nice if Schering-Plough had spent a few cents on cherry flavoring.

In any event, I was hoping someone had experience with Saphris, particularly from the perspective of it causing fatigue and sexual side effects. Looks like I may be the one to report on it instead.

Greywolf yes I do recall. Good about the two months and it does appear that as you were also the one to report on VNS you may be the one on the med too. Love Phillipa
