Parnate + Tricyclic

Posted by Sailboat77 on January 19, 2011, at 20:33:33

I've been on 50mg of Parnate for 5 weeks now (I would be at a higher dose but I get fainting spells if I go up to 60mg). Parnate has been the only medicine to ever improve my treatment-resistant depression, with the exception of Nardil to a lesser degree. My mood has improved to a modest degree, which is a huge step. I still suffer from depression though and my anhedonia hasn't gotten much better.

The problem is that I've hit a brick wall in terms of improvement in my depression. My doctor had talked to me before about adding a Tricyclic to the mix and I think I agree with him. It's obvious to me that the Parnate is vital in overcoming my depression, but it won't get me there by itself. I'm skeptical that adding another medicine will work though because in the past none of the SSRI's, Tricyclics, or atypical-antidepressants have worked. But maybe now that my mood and brain chemistry has changed somewhat, the medicines that didn't work before will work now?

Does anyone have advice or a similar experience they can share?

-Much thanks

Sailboat,

There's also the synergy factor--there is probably a more technical term-- of one med supporting another in addition to altered brain chemistry.

(I have yet to try either class....)

Good luck.

Im sure your doc knows this, but be careful of serotonin toxicity. Not sure if he intends to use a serotonergic one, or desipramine which is basically an NRI
Have you tried a stimulant yet?
TCA or a stim may help with the postural hypotension you get. Apaprently its pretty common on MAOI.

Five weeks on Parnate and you say you have hit a brick wall? What do you mean by that. The medication still has time to show benefits.
