I've read that the phrase "rule of thumb" originated way back in olden days, when, in civilized society, a man could beat his wife with a stick no larger than the diameter of his thumb.
Now, every time I read 'as a rule of thumb...' I think of people getting hit, and would like to recommend a substitute phrase of 'as a general rule...' or 'as a rule' or 'in general' or something like that.
This is just FYI to anyone that cares.

That was interesting Shar, thank you for sharing it. I doubt very much (but watch me be wrong) that many people are familiar with the origins of that phrase, and therefore don't find it offensive. But I certainly feel if it offends you, that should be taken seriously. (And I doubt I'll ever use it again) Take care, Judy

i second judy. i will try not to use it, simply because it bothers you. i think that's really important.
And, I am happy to have learned another interesting piece of linguistic info here. remember isom's post not too long ago about offensive racial words? absolutely fabulous.
