Really need to curb bloating / gas, please help

Posted by saw on September 28, 2004, at 5:55:37

Since being on Effexor (about 2 months), I have been extremely bloated and flatulent. This is driving me insane. There is so much activity going on in my tummy I could start a new population group.

My stomach is huge and I have lost all muscle control. I started milk thistle but stopped as it seemed to make my stomach distend even further.

If I don't pass the gas, my stomach becomes crampy and I feel, well ... yuk! I haven't experienced any constipation problems and I have not changed my diet.

All this needing to pass gas, almost every few minutes is really getting me down. Along with the size of my new bouncy ball stomach.

What natural remedies could I use to help with this problem that is making me quite miserable? I would really appreciate any ideas.

Thank you so much
Sabrina

Hi,
Not sure if this is your problem, but all SSRI's did that to me. I think it's the increase in serotonin...we all have(supposed to) a lot of serotonin in the gut, and I just couldn't handle the overdose of it in mine.
Fish oil (1 g per day) had a similar but lesser effect for about 3 months or so...as well as te acne.
Maybe it's not the cause for you..just an idea

If this is caused by excess serotonin in the stomach as Tealady suggests, I don't know if this would help or not, but generally, for me, probiotics eliminate gas. Also, maybe the serotonin is slowing down digestion and digestive enzymes might help also. Either "couldn't hurt" so might be worth a try.

I've been off Effexor about 3 weeks now and my tummy looks 5 months pregnant and always has while I was taking it. I don't get the gassy symptoms though. I'm taking SJW now and am wondering if the abdominal distention is also going to be present due to the SJW? Does SJW cause a build up of seritonin like the perscription drugs do?

Sabrina,

I had a similar problem a number of years ago and a friend of mine (who also suffered with bloating and gas) suggested using activated charcoal. I think you can get it at the drug store or at health food stores. It has been a while since I tried it, so I can't remember how effective it was. However, my friend swore by it for bloating, etc.
