Stress related pain?

Posted by partlycloudy on January 10, 2005, at 9:09:31

For years now, when I am over stressed, I get a severe pain in my left hip. Nothing seems to soothe the pain and it only clears up when I have addressed what is causing me stress. I can't turn over in bed; I have trouble getting in and out of my car; it is not affected by exercise (exacerbated nor relieved by it).

What is this all about? Why do OTC pain relievers fail to even come close to this pain? I have never brought it up to any doctor since I've always recognized it to be something transitory. But it hurts so much and debilitates me while it's happening.

pc,

Happens to me all the time, not in the hip though. Stress always manifests itself physically in me.

Is there anything you take for the pain? I slapped on one of those ThermaCare patches which helps tho' I feel lumpier than ever. Ugh. My husband sugegsted I take my heating pad to work, but they don't make an extension cord long enough for me to trot down the hallways with it trailing behind me. I can't concentrate when I'm like this.
Don't mind me, just whining.

I don't develop joint pain, mainly "female problems". Simply awful!

Stress whether created by me or not gives me all sorts of physical aches and pains. I get a lot of headaches, pains in my lower abdomen, stomach cramps, my legs ache that I can barely walk. My vision is often affected too. Taking anything doesn't help, I just have to "get" through it.

OTC painkillers are often anti-inflammatory in nature and as the pain is emotional ( from your head not a physical illness )it cannot kill that pain. Now say you had a psychosomatic pain where the emotion causes the illness then it would work....because your mind would have made your body sick. I think from what you explain if I understand if they took an xray they would see no infammation but if you worried yourself into a ulcer that could be treated with meds I cant think of a better way to put this.

Yes, I don't believe that any inflammation would be found. Heat helps somewhat, but any kind of movement is painful. My range of movement is OK, though, and I am able to exercise without restriction. What a nasty thing my brain is doing to my body. I have been feeling so stressed about so many things since returning to work - and nothing is work related, except that I find it stressful to maintain a calm and collected facade at work when I'm suffering inside.
More fodder for therapy.

Massage.

They can find the "point" the pain comes from.

I get that sort of stuff, too. It's because of the tension we carry, though to carry it in your hip is unusual, I think.

If you have someone who would venture to try, you could try careful pressure with an elbow in your butt, in different places until you find the right place.

Have you ever tried ice? It may help cause it numbs it...also maybe if you haven't those gradual tense then relax muscles exercises may help? I cannot think of the name as my dog is acting up really badly right now lol gak....Hope you feel some better soon

Mentioning massage made me think of reflexology. I used to go for regular sessions a few years ago. It is amazing what one can tell and heal through your feet.

Now I have a bonafide backache, probably from holding myself in such a stiff pose. At least Aleve (naproxen) works now, tho....

Well, you shouldn't iron. Standing at the irony board for a long time is very bad for one's back.

I also get stress-related pains in my thigh muscles, from my knee to my hip. I can tell if I've had a tough week by how my legs feel at the end of the week. If I'm aching by Wednesday, I know it's been a rotten week, and that I probably won't feel better until Saturday.

I have found that opioid pain relievers do help this kind of pain, and ibuprofen barely touches it. Lately my knees have been sore.

I rarely get headaches, leg-aches are commonplace for me.

I heard or read somewhere that the aches in our bodies correspond to our mental state. Like a pain in the neck is equivalent to feeling like someone GIVES you a pain in the neck. I wonder what sore knees and hips mean?
