Have any of you ever had a colonoscopy? I was thinking of discussing it with my doctor when I can get myself into his office. I've been plagued with constipation lately. I think it's probably due to a thyroid problem but I just want to rule out other problems. A friend of mine had a colonoscopy a year or so ago. She said that she felt exhausted for a week after the procedure because the preparation for the colonoscopy left her so depleted of electrolytes. I think she had to go on a clear liquid fast for at least 2 days, and then she had to drink all kinds of disgusting potions that made her have explosive bowel movements (sorry about that!). To add insult to injury, on the morning of the procedure, she had to use an enema, even though there wasn't anything left in her bowels. It sounds absolutely gruesome. If any of you have had a colonoscopy, how long did it take you to recover and regain your energy?

I had one. I didn't use more than lmg versed. It hurt like childbirth, and if I have another one done in the future I will defilnitely use the pain med available. The only thing afterwards that was bad, was passing gas. It goes on and on. it didn't make me feel weak or anything though. Fondly, Phillipa

I had one about 4 years ago because of my family history.
The worst part for me was drinking all that nasty stuff. It was gross. I ended up only being able to down half off of it but it was still enough to clean me out.
Definitely take the pain medicine. I can't imagine giong through that procedure without anything. OUCH.
Other than that, I remember being a bit groggy a few hours after (and yep.. the whole gas thing too) but was fine enough to go to church that same night.

I had one done a few months ago. It's not pleasant, like the other posters described, but you can tough it out. It's worth it for your health!

Thanks for your replies. I'll be sure not to schedule anything for at least 24-48 hours afterwards!

Ok so maybe this doesn't work so well for everyone. But lots of dried fruit (over a couple of days) has a similar (though less painful) effect on me. Tastes better though by the sounds of it.
I have recently been hearing about enemas. Some people swear by them. Even found something on a coffee enema. Not sure what the point of that was... Maybe it adds a pleasant aroma to f*rts or something...
