vitamin D- question for Larry Hoover

Hi Larry,

I was found to be deficient in vitamin D and have been taking 400 mg daily for more than a month.
For two weeks now I am suffering from severe lower back pain and stiffness - a worsening of problems I used to have. Can this be related to taking vitamin D or to the fact that I don't take calcium supplemements with it?

400 mg/day? That's 16,000,000 IU. Surely, you meant IU/day?

At 400 IU/day, I'd be really surprised to hear that pain increased because of vitamin D. If you have a diet entirely deficient in calcium, your body will take calcium from bone. But, that will occur with or without vitamin D. You'd have had to be extremely unbalanced already for the vitamin D to have had that effect. (Again, I'm assuming you meant 400 IU.)

Provided you don't have kidney disease, your body can easily deal with excess calcium in diet, so there is no reason not to take calcium supps that might exceed your bodily requirement. I advise supplemental magnesium in roughly a 2:1 calcium/magnesium ratio, as bone is composed of both.

You are right, I meant 400 IU :)
Just out of curiosity -can harm result from taking vitamin D supplements without calcium if consumption of the latter is insufficient? In other words, does taking vit D increase the reabsorption of calcium from the bones, for instance?

Only in massive overdose would vitamin D take calcium from bone. If there isn't enough calcium to go around, though, the parathyroid will see to it that bone resorption occurs.
